Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The bricks allowed for creativity and collaboration with students. The knowledge that the bricks were made from recycled products and are reusable added to our developing need to be sustainable.

“here was much excitement when the lego bricks arrived in the classroom. The tamariki help to unpack and the learning began. We( a small rural school) were learning about farm safety at the time so the bricks were used to create farm scenarios for the students to demonstrate farm safety practices. The bricks were excellent and allowed for creativity and collaboration amongst groups.”

Which kit components were the most impactful and why? The Lego was the most impactful as it created play scenarios that we could connect to the learning experiences. We could enact what was happening in a real farming community.

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? More of an understanding of the complexities and benefits farming has for the everyone. How much farming supports our livelihoods

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? We used the books that were recommended with the kit as well as basing our story telling literacy programme alongside the kit with the stories “Farmer Duck, The Enourmous Turnip and The Little Red Hen. We were able to build farms and reenact the stories using the props and the resources in the kit.

“This kit was very popular with the tamariki both with learning and play scenarios. The tamariki loved creating the lego sets together, there were lots of opportunities for team work and exploring alongside their peers. I found the resources really engaging for the tamariki. The only difficulty I had was that it was hard to incorporate all of the learning in a collaborative learning environment as it had to fit the theme of the whole group. We mitigated this by using our storytelling theme based around a farm text and through poetry. Thank you very much for providing these kits, they are wonderful.”

We don't have pets at home so I got to pretend they were my pets." 7 year old girl. "It was fun when we got to write a story about being a farmer and then we got to make our story into a play and find costumes." 8 year old boy.

“This was a great kit. We deferred using it due to other events that came up, so when we did start, the children had mainly forgotten about them being in the stores. This enabled those children whose families hadn't collected them, to be on an even footing with those who had them previously. The children enjoyed the unstructured nature of the kit and the imaginative play and opportunities that came from the characters for writing and drama in particular were wonderful.”

“This kit was very cool and exciting for the tamariki. The sets were challenging for the Y0/1 students to put together, however, I was able to use them with some older children and they enjoyed putting the sets together. The younger students enjoy using the different equipment within the normal set of bricks. It is creating a lot of discussion and creativity in play.”
