My class have thoroughly enjoyed exploring and discussing the brick farm. I used it as a provocation in our play based learning area and it brought lots of interesting questions to the foreground about agriculture. We then used that as a starting spot to spur on some reasearch and understanding about growing food. We are excited to start growing some of our own food in our new school garden.

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? Children who live on farms were able to share their knowledge. It was a relevant and high interest topic for all children. Even my reluctant learners were keen to write and participate in all activities.

What an amazing kit! The children were very focused and interested in all aspects. It was great seeing our seniors working with the juniors to help them build the lego farm. There was a lot of oral language happening and there still is. The lego table is one of the most popular indoor activities often with a lot of children working and playing well together with a lot of discussion and cooperation.

Children liked guessing what was inside the packets before they opened them. They practised team work as they worked in pairs to complete the larger boxed sets.

Too difficult to build even with an older buddy. The instructions were hard to follow. We used farms as part of a term study on Communities which fitted in really well. Disappointing we couldn't complete the models so the other activities couldn't be done well but the children were highly engaged in the play aspect.

How did the context of farming allow your learners to explore and develop literacy? With Year 1/2 students, it was most effective with oral language or visual/drawings as they were unable to read the game instructions or cards independently. We did do quite a bit of learning around the Te Reo names for animals and food too.

The students were really engaged with the farm bricks. Lots of discussion and questions were had about farms, were produce comes from etc. The bricks have continued to be a hit even now. The game aspect was little too advanced for the Year 1 students. We played as a whole class in small groups, taking turns. They liked the drawing innovation activity best of all. We simplified the spelling aspect into finger spelling the sounds we could hear - which linked nicely to their structured literacy.
