What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We were challenged as individuals and as a class to confront our previously unidentified or unknown bias and examine it in a way that made us question our viewpoints. We were given a platform in which to discuss topics that are sometimes easier to ignore.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students became more open over the course of the kit to share ideas and feelings around bias and racism. Particularly things that they were made aware of during the Inquiry. Students were more willing to discuss ideas they may previously have thought of a
The kit promoted discussions around topics that sometimes are uncomfortable and introduced the concept of racism in a non-confrontational but thought provoking way. The resources were of a very high standard and were on the whole well thought out.

I chose to utilise the kit with a small group this year - and it fit really well with our inquiry at the time. Our school was involved in an Art exhibition, where students inquired into a specific topic/issue. As the students had chosen racism, the kit really strengthened their knowledge and thinking around said issue. The outcome was a wonderfully presented art piece, made of news headlines about racism. There were resources students utilised from the kit to get their audience thinking and engaged into their exhibition.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Lots of great discussions about the statement cards and activities on giving compliments, drawing ";perceived"; ideas of people from the cards. However there are also perceptions of what ";maori"; or 'asian"; means, what people from these cultures say an
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? More compliments, thinking about who the person they are speaking to is, and how they will react. Tuakan /teina relationships. Focus on our values!
Unfortunately I have not done alot of the activities in the kit, but plan on continuing through next year with various activities. I have filled out some of the journal activities. Being Māori many of the facts, comments, reflections hit home. Racism is definitely still alive in New Zealand, though much of it is ";hidden";. Things as simple as the many negative comments about Taranaki Maunga now being the official name of our beautiful maunga ! I have completed a few activities with the children and had great feedback from them. We have 25% maori at our kura, plus 5 children of chinese descent. We are building culturally proactive practices in our class, developing tuakana teina relationships, acknowledging our own and others cultures.
