I was a bit apprehensive about signing up for this kit...but WOW! Students have been challenged and we have developed more trust in our class. We have looked at many of the activities in the context of hauora and our whare tapawha. One of the best kits yet.

Room 24 at Kenakena School have been fully engaged in their learning using the kit ‘Not Part of My World’. The Pictionary activity was a highlight and with further discussion enabled the class to identify stereotypes that exist. Students showed trust and honesty when completing their ‘I wish my teacher knew cards’. Thanks once again School Kit for a fabulous resource.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Bringing the class together and making it easier to communicate effectively (and kindly)!
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It challenged what we see when we look at each other and worked towards making a friendly and caring environment. This is why I think it will be a valuable tool for at the start of every year.
This was an amazing kit that I will use at the start of every year. My class loved the pictionary clues and we had hours of fun with this, while debating the stereotypes we hold.

Enjoyed how my tamariki enjoyed talking about who they are and it tied in quite nicely with pepeha. I didn't quite finish this kit as our pepeha took over and the tamariki wanted to focus on this more.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Students have been alerted to the use of labels and how damaging assumptions can be amongst their peer group.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students were more thoughtful and less reactive in their immediate responses to each other. They were more informed about and appreciative of the differences as well as similarities between them
Hi, We had this unit to do in Term 3 but found it very difficult to fit in with all the school activities which cam e out of the woodwork. We have done some work on it , though. Here is my feedback: I a decile 10 school with a mixed population this was an interesting exercise , quite challenging and confronting for Year 7 students. 2. students were a bit reluctant to discuss this to start with so I began with the School: the most diverse community you'll ever be part of / nethnic identities in my room. This built on something from Our orientation unit (what ethnicity do I belong to ). Students could do this with a bit of a struggle. 3. we ;'started the conversation ' about race and racism. this was challenging as their preconceived ideas were heavy and hard to shift. At this age, the use of labels 'that's racist !' etc are a bit of a 'go to for them. 4. pushed for time we squeezed in 1 more session: Yeah, but is this really a thing in Aotearoa? This fit nicely with our current maths project (statistics) with a vigorous discussion and what the statistics could mean for us now and in the future for our country and community. Louise Conolly. What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Students were made to think more about what it meant to be culturally responsive as peers in the classroom. We did not get time to reflect on the goals but it elicited some critical thinking.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The compliments poem was useful in making the classroom more positive and less judgemental. Students were excited to use the new vocab for complimenting and wanted to compliment more than one person they chose at random.
The kit was slightly confusing (for a BT) but it did prove to be a way of nicely introducing a sensitive topic. My students always love the drawing elements of every kit. We did not get time to go through all activities as the school was super busy during the term but we had some thoughtful discussions was a class, especially with the classroom goal cards.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The SMART approach made so much sense! Some targets were met quicker than expected and we talked about the difference having a plan makes.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Since working through the kit avoiding stereotyping has come up frequently but now students know how to identify it and can discuss it.
Our work on identity and community had prepared our students well for tackling this kit. Awesome resources and teaching approaches, again!
