What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The action plans were good as well. We had a couple of new students arrive from Niue who had never attended a NZ school before. They haven’t read English books before, so students decided to create some small books in groups where we could learn different
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students are more aware of how they treat and speak to each other. They are a very supportive and diverse group of students, but this kit has allowed everyone to get to know each other even better and brought us closer as a team.
What a powerful kit this was! Thank you so much! This was a fantastic kit to challenge my students about how they saw themselves and others in and outside of the classroom. They found it difficult at first to understand discrimination, but once they got it, they were very engaged and passionate about making sure they don’t make assumptions or buy into stereotypes.

This was a great kit to stimulate conversation around some of these ideas and issues. It proved to start a lot of conversations at home also as students came to school excited about their heritage that they had found out through discussions with whanau.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? The tamariki refer back to the discussions often, remembering the important messages.
As a class, we were able to discuss and think about how important it is to respect our differences. Our overarching topic for the year is Diversity so this fitted really well. Being in a small beachside village it is so important to have these discussions as we are more bicultural and not immersed in a lot of different cultures.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Having clear expectations and procedures is a great addition to the classroom. Children love knowing the right and wrong thing to do, but this has helped them to understand the right and wrong and also how to talk about it if it is wrong.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? That we are all children of the world, and that we are not just from one place. New Zealand is a very unique place in that unless you are Maori you are not from here - there is no such thing as New Zealander on your DNA results. So when we talk negatively
It was so great to have resources that helped us with these conversations about who we are and who we think other people are and why.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It has been slow and steady and something we referred back. It is something I would set up from the start of the year for next year
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It opened up the discussion around tolerance and noting differences. It also helped us address racism that was a little more subtle. We had lots of rich discussion around sarcasm, joking or teasing especially our mates - and the racism that can underpin t
This linked really well timed in with our health unit where we focused on the diversity of different people and different relationships and showing tolerance. We really enjoyed the circle activity as well at the statement cards

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We have begun to consider how different students are represented in our space - more than greetings and ";surface"; culture. We have committed to calling out casual racism - as some of our class expressed how those offhand comments were really hurtful.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We have a really positive class cultue, and this strengthened our culture. As a predominantly white, middle class group, some of the students at first thought some of the learning was not relevant to them, but we unpacked and looked at ";The Danger of a S
What an amazing kit. The teacher resource was challenging and thoughtprovoking. As a staff we are going to incorporate some of the activities into our staff meetings next year. The students were challenged to consider the assumptions they held and to conside implicit bias. We incorporated some of the lessons within our existing hauora programme, especially around trusted relationships.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? There was a massive impact in how we all speak in the classroom, and also accountability for our words and actions.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students demonstrated more respect for each other's identities, ideas, opinions and life experiences.
This kit was an amazing way to kick off a student-led inquiry into racism and how each of us can do our part in challenging bias. For myself, it led to a more personal inquiry into my own unconscious bias, and how as a Pākehā I shape my professional identity. The SMART goals and the stereotype pictionary game were really powerful activities in my classroom.
