What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Having clear procedures is a great addition. Children love knowing the right and wrong thing to do and what to expect from others as acceptable.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We are lucky to have respectful and understanding students. Delving deeper through this kit has empowered many of our students to speak up of their experiences and reflect on others around them in the community.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? it is noticeable how more accepting tamariki are of each other's strengths and weaknesses and how friendly they are in town when they see ";Din"; from the mosque

“Our little school of 6 tamariki and their Teaching Principal (me) found the resources most helpful....we visited the Taihape mosque where we were challenged to describe what a Muslim would look like and were surprised the teenager was in ";western clothes";. Last year I became interested in School Kit because a student had asked: ";why do some kids think they are better because their skin colour is different from mine";?”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? It made us look at how inclusive we are and it changed the way we referred to people and it definitely challenged the jokes we told. ";Harmless"; racism is now challenged.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It made us more thoughtful and watchful over the words we used. It made us think more about not putting people or ourselves in a box.

“The stereotype pictionary was very thought provoking and we all were challenged on how we view the world and people. I was rapt with the children being brave enough to share their thoughts and challenging each other with kindness. Such a powerful kit.”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? This was the highlight, we had some parents come and speak with the class, sharing their stories of recent migration to New Zealand and speaking about their homes previous. It was quite powerful and moving and certainly widened the students understanding

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Plenty of good discussions, fun and thought provoking learning activities. Some activities were not so relevant. Al together quite positive for the class.

“We enjoyed this unit and found it worthwhile on the whole. The teacher journal was thought provoking and a useful resource - time is always an issue however. It open up some new learning and opportunities for students to explore their family backgrounds, as well as hear about others. A lot of what was discussed we had previously touched on but it allowed us to go a bit more in depth.”

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? It has had a really positive impact as the children have realised the importance of being aware of themselves, their differences and similarities. As a result they are more tolerant of others.

“This was a very special kit. As a teacher I have been challenged by items in the teacher notebook. I like to think of myself as a life long learner and this notebook has highlighted some areas I need to do a bit more learning about. The materials supplied in the kit were well used in my class. I think this kit was great for my class - years 5 and 6. I'm not sure if I would have used the kit with a year 3 class.”

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We are going out of our ways to compliment people, about things that aren't looks and have continued to work on getting along with everyone - not just the people you like.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We are all more aware of each other and various children are making sure they play with different groups of children.

“A very thoughtful kit, challenging our ideas about ourselves and other people. We loved the Pictionary activity - it was noticeable that a lot of the children didn't know what some of the things were, particularly Muslim and Foreigner. This may have been a reflection of us being from the deep south.”
