Challenging Racism 19 Reviews

Today we role played how it might feel to be stereotyped, using a few different examples. It was really interesting to feel their indignation and hear their responses (e.g. ‘it felt absurd! I couldn’t understanding why someone would think this’). It really opened up the children’s minds to wonder about how others feel when they are in the majority or minority groups.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? With my Y3 &; 4 class, this kit has been a great way of introducing the concept of racism and encouraging acceptance of others and not judging others on their differences. I did change the title of the unit for my young ones though, to a positive ";Part o
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? After seeing a post on your facebook page, we used M&;Ms to demonstrate how we make judgments around differences. The children decided on the groupings they would try, colour, flavours, shapes, ugly/beautiful (regular shape and shiny or bumpy, lopsided an
Thank you School Kit for another fabulous resource. I did find some of it levelled too high for the Y3 - 4 group I have this year but we are continuing the concepts on through this term using a variety of books and video clips and also researching traditional celebrations of other cultures.

How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? Students are far more aware of how they treat others. They are willing to call people out for making racist comments or remarks.
School kit, you have done it again. Yet another amazing kit that challenged thinking and engaged not only the students in my classroom but myself as well!

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? This feature was great. Am wanting to implement it in other ways in the classroom also, as the students (year 7-8) responded well to it.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We have a more positive, uplifting culture in the classroom. Even some of our more challenging students are showing progress in their interactions with their peers as a result.
Great resource and so important for our kids. Thanks Schoolkit.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? Made being aware of different cultures more prevalent. Further links were made between students and about themselves. More explicitness links for me as the teacher. Good resources, some tasks were a bit too advanced but just adapted them. Also making sure
Great resource and children had great open honest discussions. Loved finding out more about all the different ethnicities in Room 5.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? We are now moving into a Social Inquiry on the effect of the Mosque attacks on our community.
I used the Not Part Of My World kit with my year 10 class. We used the stereotype Pictionary at the beginning of our Holocaust unit (where we focus on Upstanders and Bystanders). After finishing this we connected the Holocaust with the Mosque attacks with a Venn Diagram to see some of the similarities of ideas. Because I was working with a Year 10 class I took some of the pages of the Teachers Guide and had them work through it. We looked at the ethnicities in our class and created goals so around being an upstander.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? As we have been studying equity/equality all year, this unit tied in very nicely. We had already established an action plan, but gave us fresh discussions.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? A great culmination of ideas and actions that we can undertake as global citizens, tangata whenua, and members of this class. A good vibe!
Beautifully presented resources. My students really enjoyed playing stereotype pictionary. The find, apply, produce sequencing was difficult to follow.

What impact has the introduction of the action plan had on your classroom? The action plan gives us a tool to ensure that we continue to check ourselves, our behaviour and attitudes going forward.
How did using this kit change the environment in your classroom? We are more mindful of how people's lives and experiences impact their view of the world and we have started to challenge each other when someone says something inappropriate about ethnicity.
We loved this kit and in particular, the way it challenged us to think think about throw away comments we make and the stereotypes we accept without thought. We particularly enjoyed the pictionary game and finding out about where our personal journeys to New Zealand started.
