How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? I have no doubt that we will have amazing responses as it looks fantastic!

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? The four part 'self-confidence' model was a very powerful prompt for discussion. It linked in with the whare tapa wha model, which the kids are very familiar with. I believe that the letter responses were the most powerful element of the unit.

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? The daily 'self-charging station' was a powerful prompt for communication. It shifted the focus of some student-teacher communication, but shifted some student to student communication too (which was the more powerful outcome in my opinion).

“I used this kit to complement our annual 'puberty' health unit. The powerful videos, wholistic model of self-confidence, and emphasis on communication added an incredibly valuable element to a unit that had previously heavily focuses on the physical changes adolescents experience, but largely ignored the social and emotional changes that also happen. The caring adult letters were the highlight of the unit. The responses some of the kids received were so moving. For many students I'm sure their letter will become a personal taonga that will be treasured for lifetimes.”

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? We didn't get as far as using the charging system

“The kit had a lot of components to it, I like that it had student workbooks - they could have ownership of this, which was good. There were some elements that were easy to explain and others not so much....the information sheet for teachers to teach from wasn't explicit - the instructions need to be made more clearer - I wasn't sure of the purpose of the poems?”

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? It gave them the skills to take the power and be themselves; to understand that it is okay to feel a variety of emotions and voice how they are feeling without the fear of being shot down.

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? I have a solid relationship with my class and they feel that they can tell me anything.

How have the components within the kit helped develop your student self-confidence? I feel there is a greater acceptance of being individual, and celebrating who you are. The videos were so relatable and hit home for many of the students. I saw some get a bit emotional and this really made them stop and think about how they view themsel

How have the components of the kit helped develop Student-Teacher communication? The red letter idea was awesome and increased communication. I wanted this to be discrete, so had a box in a corner, for students to be dropping them into when needed. The students appreciated being 'unknown' when sharing problems.

“What an awesome unit to promote and foster self esteem! My intermediate students have thoroughly enjoyed working through the activities, and have most certainly developed a stronger sense of self awareness. Starting the unit by watching the video was very powerful, and immediately generated conversation. Checking in, then reading the charging station cards provided my students with many ways to increase their positivity and suggestions as to how to feel better. I loved how the families were involved, and the letter from a parent/significant person was very special, and something for them all to treasure. I have had many parents also comment on what a fabulous unit it is, after seeing their activity booklets. We have just completed this unit, as with Covid etc, we pushed it into this final term. In actual fact, with students moving onto High School, it was quite timely to give them that reminder that they are all unique and valued. Thank you to the sponsors, planners and coordinators! I would definitely teach this again, and am taking ideas from it to use in future with different classes.”
