What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The 60minute food walk was amazing for exploring local community with a focus
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? This too is ongoing as we have looked at our recycling and next term will focus on the huge wastage created by compass group school lunches
I am still in the process of using all of the resources. The students have loved the activities we have done so far and are keen to signup for more Term 2. I am at an intermediate so afternoon classes are extra curricular and optional. Its a good sign that Term 1 students are wanting more!

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Being located rurally, we didn’t have vege shops within walking distance however they noticed how involved we can become with our local community garden situation on the school property.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? No but we were able to bring new light to some initiatives that already exsist
The Good Food Map was so engaging for our tamariki. It coincided with our Enviroschool studies and exploration of te taiao. We could follow it in our own pace and got our community involved, from reusing vegetable donated from our patakai to appreciating shopping locally, this really got an awesome buzz and korero around our kura.

This box was amazing. It was well prepared and had lots of great resources. It was meant to students in years 4-8 and I can see how that would fit them more. Unfortuantely it was limited for year 9s but was great to try out.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? This was tricky as we couldn't leave the school so we could only talk about what we already knew.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? A group of girls have become aware of the litter around the school and started an initiavtive to have people opt in to help tidy up the school. Not food waste necessarily but the human impact of waste.
My class was engaged in most of the lessons, particularly anything hands-on (making pickle!)

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? Not as much as I'd like. This group are quite self-centred, more interested in what actually affects them and not what others are doing/experiencing overseas.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Most were really impractical, such as making things with the waste without consideration for decomposition or smells.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The map centred on our school didn't show a lot of the shops, so we moved it to have our school at the far end. Then we made heaps of discoveries about the shops selling food within our area. Kids would come the next day and tell me they'd discovered eg another dairy on the far border. Everyone who came in was dragged over to look at our map, so many food places, and most of them fast food places. They were awestruck.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Not so much within school, but our area has recently been issued with food waste bins with the weekly rubbish. Many kids reported going home and encouraging their families to use their bins better - or begin using them.
We had a whale of a time with this Good Food Map. Thankyou for the link to print it in the first place! You will see white labels on our map because everyone wanted to mark where they lived. Only a few have pins to the side and live outside. Such thoughtful discussions about all the fast-food places on the peninsula. We have one food factory and no community gardens or orchards. We checked online for gardens near us and a couple of kids got their families to drive out on the weekend. Food favourites and not was a big success, we even got replies from overseas grandparents. Some foods had to be explained eg tripe. Tallies, lists, order, all links to maths. Our 60 min walk poem also caused good discussions. We/they decided to lay out all the statements and arrange them according to how they sounded, so not strictly in order of what we sensed. We didn't get to the preserving/soup making. It didn't suit the weather or Term 4 busyness, but I have kept the instructions and items, and will do it with my new class this year and link it in with our Garden To Table lessons. Overall, a very good kit, and such a great link to our school's Inquiry topic Kaitiakitanga. The kids learnt heaps. Thankyou
