How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? It made the students aware of the issue, this was completed at a time when the school lunch debacle was in full swing and the waste of food due to students not enjoying their meals.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? There is a stunning vegetable garden at The Curator's Cottage - just down the road from us, that barely anyone had visited before.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Not exactly, but we are always thinking and trying to link learning into our community.
What a great unit! Thanks School Kit. The learning was varied, fun and engaging. We particularly loved the intergenerational conversations and ended up makeing a class recipe book. We are celecrating the end of our unit today by eating delicious soup. Thank you!

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? Not as much as I'd like. This group are quite self-centred, more interested in what actually affects them and not what others are doing/experiencing overseas.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Most were really impractical, such as making things with the waste without consideration for decomposition or smells.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? The map centred on our school didn't show a lot of the shops, so we moved it to have our school at the far end. Then we made heaps of discoveries about the shops selling food within our area. Kids would come the next day and tell me they'd discovered eg another dairy on the far border. Everyone who came in was dragged over to look at our map, so many food places, and most of them fast food places. They were awestruck.
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? Not so much within school, but our area has recently been issued with food waste bins with the weekly rubbish. Many kids reported going home and encouraging their families to use their bins better - or begin using them.
We had a whale of a time with this Good Food Map. Thankyou for the link to print it in the first place! You will see white labels on our map because everyone wanted to mark where they lived. Only a few have pins to the side and live outside. Such thoughtful discussions about all the fast-food places on the peninsula. We have one food factory and no community gardens or orchards. We checked online for gardens near us and a couple of kids got their families to drive out on the weekend. Food favourites and not was a big success, we even got replies from overseas grandparents. Some foods had to be explained eg tripe. Tallies, lists, order, all links to maths. Our 60 min walk poem also caused good discussions. We/they decided to lay out all the statements and arrange them according to how they sounded, so not strictly in order of what we sensed. We didn't get to the preserving/soup making. It didn't suit the weather or Term 4 busyness, but I have kept the instructions and items, and will do it with my new class this year and link it in with our Garden To Table lessons. Overall, a very good kit, and such a great link to our school's Inquiry topic Kaitiakitanga. The kids learnt heaps. Thankyou

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? They were able to relate the problem in their immediate surroundings to a worldwide issue.
What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Students found various solutions online but composting bins and a worm farm were the most practical for our school, as we already had them right outside our classroom.

What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? Some students did not know about social enterprises in their local areas, such as Everybody Eats, and their use of food that shops would otherwise discard. I shared my experience of dining in Onehunga with a review that rated their beans as "the best I have ever tasted".
Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We are using the compost bins but have not bought any worms for the worm farm, yet...
This kit interested me because it supported our TE HURINGA KAI - The Food Cycle unit, as well as my KAITIAKITANGA specialty class. The huge poster was displayed in class and students explored food waste solutions from Aotearoa and the rest of the world using the digital copy. I will be pickling with my students next year, as I am still learning myself, through trial and error about the best ways to preserve different fruits and veges. My students developed greater awareness of food production by planting lettuce, basil and silverbeet seedlings into large soda bottles that were transplanted into garden beds at school and at some students' homes. We celebrated food heroes in our class but I would like to explore others in the local area, as we were unable to do this part of the unit due to end of year events. I love maps but found the round task too difficult so next year I will use grid references instead. About 1/3 of my students live in other suburbs so they did not know anything about food heroes in this area.
