What did your students find in your community that they hadn’t noticed before and what sparked that discovery? They didn't know about the community gardens, how to participate, what they offered etc. We had one garden coordinator come in and speak with our students and engage them in authentic mahi (advertising the garden) as an act of participation

Has this kit prompted any new food related initiatives within your school? We have applied for and received funding for a school composting system and will look to add to/extend our school maara and create a full system

What were the most creative food waste solution suggestions? Unfortunately we ran out of time to complete this task. Hope to continue it on next year

How did the resource inform students’ understanding of food waste as a global vs local issue? The waste section helped students to analyse the Horowhenua Council sustainability plan. They found that the Council's only strategy was to piggy back onto another existing project within the community. The unit was timed so that it coincided with the Enviro waste speaker's visit to the school. He took four one hour sessions. We then went global. The juniors used the vegetables in the school garden, so we didn't make soup. Smoothies were a hit though.

“This kit was really awesome with its practicality. Unfortunately some of the activities involved going outside of school grounds, and the time it takes to do the RAMS forms for that did not encourage us to do it!”
