How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? The Bristlebots were an engaging and easy way for them to be introduced to basic electronics. I also got them to use their plane making as part of their maths and graph their distances flown to compare with others.

“This was fantastic - the kids loved the problem solving/code cracking aspect. None of the students had heard of Jean Batten before so this was a great opportunity to learn about someone that is an important part of our history. The mystery box at the start really hooked them in.”

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? It was fantastic and showed how STEM can easily be added into most areas of learning. I loved how it helped the boys to stay on task and have a huge amount of fun while also learning.

“Wow! This kit was absolutely amazing. A highly engaging and challenging kit the had my class of boys focussed, challenged and engaged the whole time. They shared their learning with their parents recently who were also impressed with what they were able to do. Solving the clues gave a great sense of acheivement.”

How has this kit influenced your confidence in STEM teaching and learning? I enjoy this sort of work and task anyway. I am happy for the children to take charge, make decisions and trial and test ideas. It just gave me a new forum to develop skills and positive mind-set attitudes in my class.

“The children had a huge amount of fun and their problem solving skills developed well over the event. Fabulous chance for children to co-operate and collaborate. The resources were amazing. Congratulations to the team who put this altogether. The only 2 problems we had - the blue lettering was extremely hard to read under classroom lights (and it was too cold and miserable outside) and the ball ticket activity was too hard (the children didn't know what a pig pen code was or that they had to use it and the code on the computer was missing the dots which meant they ended up with the wrong letters).”

They said it sounded boring. I gradually gave them more snippets about what other aspects would be included (deciphering codes and making things etc

“This kit introduced the class to investigating and researching an important wahine figure in New Zealand's history. Students were introduced to skills such as note-taking and evaluating sources of information. As they grew more interested they got deeper into the topic to find out more. They were horrified that because she was seen to be "exploiting men"that the history of her legacy is slightly tainted. This was confirmed by a teacher at our school whose mum works for the Reserve Bank - she advocated for her to be included on one of our bank notes and that was the reason given for her not. It helped bring the topic to further life.”

“The children were engaged with the making of the little aeroplanes and this tied nicely with learning about electrical circuits. The children also loved the code breaking activity and flying their paper planes. They were able to connect with this piece of NZ history through the inspiring adventurous lady she was.”
