In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? - Planting the vegetable seeds themselves gave the children a sense of ownership and responsiblity as they were excited to see the seed growing into little seedlings. They learned about the vegetable and planned how they were going to eat it.

“My class received the LGL kit on 21st of Sepetember which was near the end of Term 3. The children missed the observation opportunity during the term break. -Membership applcation (+badges) was a great way to give them a sense of belonging and responsiblities. -The kit was well-organised and the children were keen to learn about their vegetable seeds. The only problem we had was that the labels of the seeds got wet and were ruined very quickly. -School kit teacher's resource was excellent. We learned a lot about planting from the video provided. The children enjoyed using their membership cards to decode the secret messages so much!”

The variety of plants gave students lots of chances to try vegetables that they might not otherwise be exposed toby their families - like radishes, kale and borage flowers. “My students loved the idea of a secret club and were engaged right from the start. Drama (and the imagined world) was such a great way of introducing the kit. The application form, badges and other club items really helped to build belief with the students. Once our seedlings were big enough we planted them in our school garden. All children were willing to try new veggies and even wanted to try other parts of the plant - like the radish leaves.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This kit provide multiple opportunities for cross-curricular learning, from cracking the code, to measuring how tall the plants had grown and graphs to show our favourite vegetables. Endless possibilities. A really great kit!

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I loved that we were able to send the seedlings home with the kids and they were able to share their learning with their whanau. They were so excited! Hopefully they will go on to harvest their own veggies and enjoy cheap nutritious food, grown with love.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Kids were able to list just a handful of vegetables before the start of the Kit. They have enjoyed tasting different vegetables and are now able to recognise many more plants growing in the school garden too.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This kit was very adaptive for cross-curricular learning. We were able to graph the plant growth, measure plant growth, use scientist eyes to observe plants, identify new plants and research them, write instructions on how to care for our plants etc.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Once our plants have grown, we will be exploring more in depth about how to prepare healthy food in delicious ways to encourage the students to try more vegetables.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? My students have been exposed to a wide range of vegetables, some of which they hadn’t heard of before or tried. There has been great discussion and exploring around ways to prepare vegetables in healthy, delicious ways too.

“The suggested overview for how to set up the LGL was of great help at the beginning. Framing it as a secret club with coded messages really helped to hook the kids in and engage them from day one. Every morning, they are excited to see how the plants are growing and have learnt a great deal about how to grow vegetables. It has helped to expose them to a wide range of vegetables that some of them had not seen or tried before.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? taking care of our plants, reading about the nutritional value of the plants / veges, drawing the veges on plates, teaching about 1/2s and 1/4 and food servings. This was cross curricular learning just from your plants.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? I wanted to do some cooking and class sharing but was unable to due to covid 19.
