The 25 students in Room 14 came alive with the simple joy and magic of growing the fantastic little garden range of plants. A large part of the focus this year has been on noticing, and responding with care. This hands on kit allowed this focus to cross over to plants with the students having to follow instructions , care for their plant and look carefully for change. They loved playing the card match game which could be learnt instantly and played by anyone. The simple motto of grow, protect and taste came in very handy when we made vegetable soup on the last day of term 3. One student even wanted to take Charlie Chive on holiday in a camper van.

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?
In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used the kit in writing and reading. We explored measurement predicting how fast they would grow and taking weekly measurements. As we are a digital class there were also lots of drawing and animations created.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Our next topic has been 'Backyard Detectives"; so we have tied this in with looking at what lives with these plants... helpful and not so helpful insects.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Made them more aware of what you could do with vegetables. Sharing recipes and learning about new vegetables they hadn't tried before.
This kit was fantastic. I really think that the introduction of the Little Garden League characters made a huge difference. My class loved learning about each character. It created some fantastic writing, art and a few of the class even made awesome digital animations.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used it for a variety of art ideas, maths learning, (graphing, sharing out- fractions) , English - writing ‘activities explaining and detailing their experiences with growing a variety of plants

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We created a little book for students to draw and write their observations of how the plants grew. This linked to literacy and art and science. Huge opportunity for cross-curricular learning.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? If the plants grow enough by the end of the year, we will harvest the vegetables and enjoy them in a shared lunch.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The kit gave the opportunity for children to learn about a range of vegetables and different ways of cooking them, as well as discussions comparing flavours that are similar or different.
This was a wonderful kit that encouraged discussion and observation around how plants grow and how to take care of them.

Writing: It provided a lot of writing opportunities given the excitement of receiving the kit, applying for the LGL membership, planting the seeds, and learning how to look after their seedlings as well as the importance of including vegetables in the die
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? - Promote deeper understanding of vegetables - Used common vegetables to raise their interest of other plants
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? - Planting the vegetable seeds themselves gave the children a sense of ownership and responsiblity as they were excited to see the seed growing into little seedlings. They learned about the vegetable and planned how they were going to eat it.
My class received the LGL kit on 21st of Sepetember which was near the end of Term 3. The children missed the observation opportunity during the term break. -Membership applcation (+badges) was a great way to give them a sense of belonging and responsiblities. -The kit was well-organised and the children were keen to learn about their vegetable seeds. The only problem we had was that the labels of the seeds got wet and were ruined very quickly. -School kit teacher's resource was excellent. We learned a lot about planting from the video provided. The children enjoyed using their membership cards to decode the secret messages so much!

As they grew their own seedlings and cared for them, they were willing to try new vegetables and also those vegetables which they tried before but didn’t like the taste of. We watched a few videos through which we learnt the importance of eating vegetable
Enthusiastic Little Gardeners – I started noticing the enthusiasm of my learners as soon as the School Kit arrived. They did a little test in which they had to recognise and write the names of at least 5 vegetables from the list provided to them. They were really excited to plant their own seedlings and watch them germinate. Some of them got the seedlings of those vegetables which they don’t like the taste of and some of them got the ones that they never tasted before. As we discussed the motto ‘GROW, PROTECT, TASTE’, they wanted to give the new vegetables a go. Every morning, when they used to come to school, they used to check whether their seedling needed water and they were very keen to know more about vegetables. This kit really motivated the children to take care of their seedlings, try new vegetables and learn how vegetables help them to grow.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Once the rest of our plants have finished growing we will explore preparing healthy food by combining ingredients not just tasting individual vegetables.

My students loved the idea of a secret club and were engaged right from the start. Drama (and the imagined world) was such a great way of introducing the kit. The application form, badges and other club items really helped to build belief with the students. Once our seedlings were big enough we planted them in our school garden. All children were willing to try new veggies and even wanted to try other parts of the plant - like the radish leaves.
