My new entrant class loved the little garden kit. We learnt about parts of a plant, how to look after them then we planted the little gardens and were very excited to see them grow. The children loved watering them and talking about what they need to grow. they were very excited about becoming LGL members. Our test was to say what plants needed to grow. The children loved the badges but unfortuntley these didn't last long as the clips were weak. The children loved tasting the vegies that we could.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We discussed the needs of plants, read poems and stories about planting and health. It linked well to the sexuality unit which was about being healthy and assertive.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We are now replanting our school garden so we will continue what the kits started.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We linked the planting to the food pyramid and we discussed our lunch boxes in relation to this every morning.
The kits were well resourced and easy for the junior children to put together with the help of an adult. Only problem was we had lots of rain prior to the holidays so we weren't able to plant the seedlings out so some died during the holidays. I should have prepared them as soon as I got them. The children loved them and many have taken them home and planted them in their home garden and I get progress reports.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We ran out of time to do everything we had planned but there was lots of literacy reading books, writing about the seeds, science - seed germination, maths - measuring the plants, cooking recipes with fruit/veg
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The children want to grow some flowers so will probably start with sunflowers and also grow plants for the monarch butterflies.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? When we had our brain break every day we talked about what was a veggie and what was a fruit, what we should eat etc, we googled different sorts of fruit and veggies which they didn't know about which hugely increased their knowledge of fruit and veg.
The children loved the idea of the club and being members of the club. We set up a tent as our clubhouse and the kids loved going in their clubhouse. They loved watering and looking after the seeds and knew exactly which ones they had planted. They really loved posting their letters and the letterbox was great as they would check it to see if there was mail, so they received all sorts of letters.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Maths - measuring vegetables, counting the days since germination Science - life cycle of plants Writing - writing letters to the LGL, code cracking Reading - reading books around the theme of growing Religious Education - caring for our common home
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We used this kit as a starting point for our keeping ourselves safe and healthy unit.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? All children were willing try new vegetables and recipes at the request of the LGL founding members. We are excited to explore this further.
Absolutely fantastic kit from School Kit and New World. Thank you so much. The children loved being part of an 'league' and this lead to even the most reluctant vegetable eaters trying all sorts of new veges in our taste testing challenges. We planted them, measured them as they grew and then have planted them into the school planter box (which was very kindly donated by New World in Tokoroa). The children are excitedly waiting for their own veges to sprout! The code crackers were a highlight as they kept engagement going as updates were received throughout. It was a great partner activity for the children to work through at the Year 1/2 level.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We integrated our Topic of Dig It, with our Reading and Writing curriculum. This was extremely easy to do, tying in really well. It also allowed for an extension of time allocation to the topic ie: 3 hours a day (with valid connections made authentically
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The students became more curious about how different vegetables and plants grow, which led into a discussion on pollination and the importance of bees to our planet. Our next step based on student interest is to investigate other types of unusual plants (
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students learnt the different types of vegetables, how they are grown and how they can be used. We will use the plants that we are planting from the Little Gardens to make a healthy bread roll lunch in a couple of weeks time. This way they can see the pro
We used Little Garden as an introduction to our 'Dig It' planting unit. This was an extremely motivational hook-in to the unit, as the students learnt the concept of food to table. They loved the idea of becoming a LGL member, with the mystery of the club being exciting for them and exclusive as a member. The supporting activities were really good - with the Crack the Code, the Vege Patch Match, the Pick Me letter and the videos adding opportunities for extension within the unit. The membership pins were a highly valued addition. Being in partnership with New World made it 'real life' and community based. One of our students accepted responsibility for the Little Garden Sticker book - collecting the stickers and the Little Garden Rosette once the book was completed. Being able to sign up as a member of the Little Garden Community group made community connections. This was an outstanding resource and guided the whole class topic of 'Dig It'! Thank you for the opportunity for our class to be involved.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Maths - longest/shortest,?How many plants altogether"; How many days until each plant started sprouting. Oral language - Loads of talk both at school and at home as well. Vocabulary - names of vegetables, new words - soil, sprouting, leek, radish, celer
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Students involved in their gardens at home. Taking an interest in what is on their plate. Also, enjoying shopping at New World and the excitement of adding to their garden.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We talked and talked and talked about the different plants. We could tell the teacher which ones we already had at our house. Sometimes we have them for dinner. Some people learned about new kinds of vegetables.
We wanted to plant the garden because we wanted it to grow. We wanted to see which ones grew the fastest and it was the radish. We only made a tinsy mess on the table and that made the teacher very, very, very happy because it didn't dirty all around. It was a little bit hard to water the plants because our watering can was giant and sometimes the water went down the side. When we took our plants to our house, our Mum's helped us to put them in a pot or in our big garden. From Room 1.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used the Little Gardens as a basis for learning in the areas of oral language, writing, viewing, and science.
What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Future opportunities for our class (if we have time!) could include planting our class seedlings in the outside garden and harvesting (sharing?) some of the produce.
In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Children have become more aware of the importance of including vegetables in a balanced (healthy) diet. They also shared their ideas around how to eat their favourite vegetables (e.g. raw (crunchy), in a salad, etc.)
The plants and badges were great. We used the Little Gardens as a basis for discussions and writing activities around vegetables, healthy eating, and how to plant and look after seeds and seedlings.
