In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? This tied in perfectly to physical education curriculum as while we were doing this the children were also training for cross country. They learnt how healthy eating goes hand-in-hand with exercise to keep our bodies healthy.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students being responsible for their own plant has encouraged discussions around other vegetables and the way they grow.

“As a keen gardener myself, I found this resource awesome! The way it encouraged children to take responsibility not only for their seedling, but healthy eating is so positive to see. I teach in a town where their are a lot of takeaways easily accessed and most children don't have the knowledge of growing vegetables but giving them a 'taster' has shown a lot of them how easy it can be!”

We were able to use this for maths - they all guessed how long they thought it would take for each plant to grow and have measured the ones that have grown. “This has been great. The kids have been excited about it from when we opened the box. Some kids had never planted a seed before and it was awesome to see them get involved. Every member of my class opted into the squad and have helped water the plants. We are going to repot them and have each student take a plant home with them.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? In maths we talked about measurement and compared the lengths of plants. We wrote about what we planted and what the plant was. We finished our unit drawing beautiful spring flowers and dyed them.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The children learnt about parts of plants, different types of plants and that patience, along with sun and water was needed to grow them. They were eager to take them home and water them.

“The children were so excited to be part of an exclusive club. I really built up that part. Many wore their badge every day, it was part of their uniform! We learnt all about what plants need to grow, the recommended YouTube clips were great. They enjoyed planting the seeds and every morning the first thing they did when arriving at school was to check the plant growth. They also did so well cracking the codes, they are only year 0 &; 1.”

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? My classroom is play based and the children were able to use their new knowledge within the dramatic play area when cooking for their friends.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We then talked about fruit and how fruit grows. We would love to establish some fruit trees at school.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our school is very pro-active when it comes to healthy eating and nutrition. We already have our own maara (vegetable garden) so this experience just added to the knowledge they already had.

“The children in my classroom had lots of fun creating their little garden. They took the responsibility of caring for them very seriously and were very proud of their badges. We had lots of fun playing the bingo game and filling in the forms. Some of our vegetables have grown big and strong and we have now replanted them in a bigger pot. We will then transfer them into our school maara (vegetable garden).”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We talked a lot about the process of planting which links to science. We also did a lot of writing (literacy). Some guided writing but a lot of self motivated stuff was done by the kids e.g. writing letters to the vegetables, writing observations.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The gardening and the cooking of those vegetables.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Learning about a variety of vegetables. Planting the actual vegetables makes the children more excited about tasting them.

Science - plants, learning about growing plants, what plants need to grow etc. Physical health - keeping ourselves safe, healthy eating and awareness etc. Maths - measu

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Continuing on healthy eating and nutrition as this supports our keeping ourselves safe and healthy programme. Will look at getting some more plants into the classroom as well. Cooking and baking when the plants have finished growing.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We talked about healthy eating and the food pyramid. Talked about what makes us healthy. Supporting our journey as we continue this into the next term.
