In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We were able to use the kit for developing oral language skills and team work. We used it for recount writing, poetry, reading and art. It also fitted well with health and PE.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Using our school garden to plant and grow vegetables.

“The children loved being part of this Kit. They were very excited about being a member of the club and wore their badges with pride. Everyday they looked to see how their seeds were growing and this was a nice way to start the morning with their classmates. There were so many resources provided with the kit that could be used as you wished. They were also able to identify many more vegetables.”

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? counting how many plants had grown and comparing plant size was a daily activity. We also used our experience to write. We had gardening books available also for the children to read and compare with their own experience.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? we will be transferring these seedlings to our school garden, so the learning will continue and we will be able to taste our plants.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students made connections to vegetables they liked and didn't like. Lots of children didn't know some of the vegetables such as radish and kale. The herbs were also new to most of the children.

“The little garden kit created some excitement among the 5 year olds. They enjoyed planting the seeds and talked about what was needed to help them grow and keep them alive. The stickers and pictures provided helped them to make connections to vegetables they had eaten and liked or disliked as well as have an idea as to what they coukd expect to grow.The idea and story behind the secret garden club was a little bit beyond their understanding as was the de coding, however they still enjoyed planting and watching the veges sprout as they cared for them.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We have linked with writing, our syndicate had a 'fruit and vegetable election' where they wrote their own campaign speeches for their vegetable. We have investigated light energy through science experiments once we noticed the plants were all growing tow

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Our goal this term is for the children to cook recipes using the vegetables they have grown or planted as they may not be quite ready for harvesting. We are going to share the food with the junior school as a link to the Garden to Table program.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our school-wide Deep Learning focus has been Hauora. This linked well to the Taha Tinana (Physical) aspect of well-being and the importance of making healthy food choices.

“We have really enjoyed the kit. The kids loved cracking the codes and receiving the badges to wear around school. The enthusiasm has definitely transferred into home environments as so many of the children have been growing their own at home. Our seedlings have now been transplanted into pots and will eventually be planted into our school vegetable garden.”

We are actually continuing this theme next term as a school wide focus and are now building school vege gardens to put our seedlings into, as well as going to help in our local community garden. In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They are all more aware about some different types of veges and are taking more risks with their eating habits (trying new things)

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? science- life cycle p.e - health wellbeing maths- counting how many pots we needed literacy- working out the codes for the secret message drama- role playing the difference veggies and being the 'vegetables heros'

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Where does our food come from? through planting our own food we will learn that veggies and other food items don't just come from a super market, there is a process and place where things are made.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Identifying new vegetables. The bingo game was a great way to identify and learn new names of veggies

They have taken pride in their seed growing and have enjoyed sharing what new veggies they are eating at home. LGL has linked in with our life cycle programme and they have loved watching the seeds progress”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? They children were motivated to find out the code (reading) and also excited to write about the pledge and the seedling they received. It tied into our plant science inquiry well. We also measured the seedlings as they grew.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? To continue the learning process of planting these into an outdoor garden and discovering the successes or failings of growing plants. Cooking food using the food we have grown.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They were introduced to new vegetables which they haven't tried before.

“The students were very engaged in the premise of being in a club and receiving a badge to show their pledge. The kit tied in beautifully with our inquiry topic of exploring plants and how we can give back to the earth.”
