In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? It was very easy to incorporate the names of various vegetables into maths concepts. Word stories became focussed on vegetables. We could write the procedure for growing a plant. We can become aware of how we can grow our own food and save ourselves money

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? When the plants have grown, we can learn how to add them to our garden. When they begin to produce vegetables we will be able to taste them and create amazing dishes.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We have been introduced to a number of delicious vegetables through this process. We can name all of the vegetables that we have tried at home.

“There was such excitement in my classroom as the pack arrived at school. The next day, the clubhouse was established and the tamariki were given the opportunity to own and make a plant, crack a code and belong to something bigger than just our school community. They are highly engaged with seeing just how much their plants have grown over every morning. We can’t wait to put them into our B5 garden and taste some new vegetables.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Opportunities for science and growing plants and learning what they needed to grow. English - loved the codes, children loved filling them in and then reading them.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Senses - using our senses to try new vegetables.

It brought to the children's attention all the various types of vegetables that there are (they loved learning the names of the founding club members). “Little Garden League was lots of fun and inspired children to learn about, eat and try to grow different vegetables. Children loved the badges, pledge cards and secret codes. Some badges fell apart so it was great to have a few extras. Thanks New World for the great kit!”

“Brand new to school, my new entrant students loved the opportunity to explore this unit. They were in awe when the soil expanded when water was added and marvelled at the different seed sizes. Eyes widened when they saw the shoots appearing! We made vegetable soup as a way to try some of the foods they were growing. The characters were fun to create also, we called them our vege friends. It was great fun seeing them plant the seed and watching the amazement as they started growing. In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Tied in well with our health and science curriculum in particular. We also wrote about vegetables, read stories about vegetables and used them during our fractions unit in maths.

All children have willingly sampled new, raw vegetables and have amazed some parents with their new found love for some previously disliked or not tried veges. Some children have brought in vegetables from home for the whole class to try.

“My class and I are loving this kit - it is so interactive and suits all abilities. The children really loved the initial secrecy of the club and took it very seriously. The topic matter tied in well with our Life Education healthy eating lessons and offered a wonderful platform for extensions to just growing the plants, especially sharing, sampling and experimenting with raw vegetables. We intend to carry on next term as the plants grow and look at recipes and sharing our vegetables with the wider community if possible in the lead up to Christmas.”
