“Brand new to school, my new entrant students loved the opportunity to explore this unit. They were in awe when the soil expanded when water was added and marvelled at the different seed sizes. Eyes widened when they saw the shoots appearing! We made vegetable soup as a way to try some of the foods they were growing. The characters were fun to create also, we called them our vege friends. Thank you school kit, once again you delivered!”

It was great fun seeing them plant the seed and watching the amazement as they started growing. In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Tied in well with our health and science curriculum in particular. We also wrote about vegetables, read stories about vegetables and used them during our fractions unit in maths.

To compare and discuss (eg: raw vs. cooked preferences) and respect the opinions of others. To create an awareness of what they eat and perhaps have discussions at home regarding this. To explore f

All children have willingly sampled new, raw vegetables and have amazed some parents with their new found love for some previously disliked or not tried veges. Some children have brought in vegetables from home for the whole class to try.

“My class and I are loving this kit - it is so interactive and suits all abilities. The children really loved the initial secrecy of the club and took it very seriously. The topic matter tied in well with our Life Education healthy eating lessons and offered a wonderful platform for extensions to just growing the plants, especially sharing, sampling and experimenting with raw vegetables. We intend to carry on next term as the plants grow and look at recipes and sharing our vegetables with the wider community if possible in the lead up to Christmas.”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Room 11 loved planting the seeds and talking about the different types of vegetables. Many children went home and talked about what they had planted and were more willing to try new veggies.
