In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Between Science and technology - great links. They wrote about what they had done to plant the seeds - procedural writing.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Continuing to grow plants from seeds in our class garden outdoors. Raising our own seeds. Being more aware of where food actually comes from.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Talking about vegetables and how they grow. Why they are good for us and why we should eat them. We looked at the seeds and then got some vegetables for the kids to try before we planted them. Most were very keen to plant and grow their own vegetables.

“A great kit with easy resources to use.Children loved the secret codes and all ages were able to do this . A great resource which is relevant to the new digital curriculum and using codes. Photo below of children after growing the little garden in their pots now planting in garden boxes that we constructed outside our new Hub from materials provided by New World Ngaruawahia.”

“Our students have thoroughly enjoyed planting the Little gardens and watching them grow - coming in each day to school and seeing the progress of the plants. They were very excited to be part of the secret little garden league and really loved decoding the secret codes. Having the badges and the decoding alphabet was an added bonus for them. This kit will continue for quite some time. It has been fantastic. Thank you”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They kept a small diary over 2-4 days of what they were eating to see if they were eating enough fruit and vegetables. We looked at their lunchboxes, healthy food vs unhealthy and alternative options like wraps, sushi, homemade baking vs store bought etc.

“The whole way the kit was put together was brilliant. The children brought into it straight away and loved the idea that they were part of secret group. Brilliant.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Maths: measurement Social science: looking at changes in community - how does this change a person? Groups of people? Science: process of plants growing, biology of plants

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This has tied in beautifully with what children do in our Enviro Club and generated new/more enthusiasm for what they currently do in the school orchid. Looking forward to building on this in term 4.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Kids really interested in different vegetables they had not heard of and keen to try. Generated lots of enthusiasm for bringing healthier lunches (lots of kids tried really hard to).

“This was a great, hands on kit that perfectly fit with what we were doing for the term (community) and the kids loved it. Lots of collaborating in terms of care for our plants, new learning around how vegetables, plants and gardens impact community. Awesome resource. Kids loved the codes, the stories, the badges. Service was great too - delivered on time, easy instructions, straight forward. Really awesome!”

“The hook of application and filling out the form, posting it and waiting for approval was great fun for my new entrants. The magic of adding water to the coconut fibre and seeing it expand was cool for the kids. Germination was even better. We watched time lapse video of seeds germinating. We collected seeds from their fruit, and some saved seeds from home. They loved the badges, we will carry on planting new seeds next term.”
