In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We talked about observing like scientists how plants grow. We wrote about vegetables in a guess my vegetable way. We cooked and ate vegetables. We read about vegetables and drew pictures of vegetables.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Pollination and bees What makes a vegetable and vegetable and a fruit a fruit. Trying new things

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? There wasn't much info within the kit about healthy eating to be honest. It was mostly about the types of vegetables and how they grow. This is the focus we took.

“The children absolutely loved being hands on with their plants in the classroom. The videos were great to look at with the children and they LOVED cracking the codes together as a class. We also bought some veges and roasted them and did some taste testing which was a great experience. We had a few 'vege' discos and read books like 'tops and bottoms' etc. It would be great to have a list of books that relate to this topic to continue to engage learning. The children learned about how plants grow, how to care for them and that veges grow in different ways, some at the top and some at the bottom. Every morning the children diligently came in to care for their seedlings. It was a great lesson in responsibility. It was a bit of a shame that the badges broke easily as this caused a bit of angst for our children.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? The kids loved working out the secret codes during our writing time. Measuring the seeds didn't really happen as it was hidden at the back of the seed tray so kids forgot about it.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We made vegetable soup one day. Children were asked to bring in a vegetable and prepare it for the crock pot. It provided a great way for children to try a vegetable that they may not have done on it's own. We needed to learn about some vegetables/herbs t

“As a whole the Little Garden Club has been well received by the children in my class. They liked seeing other children in the school who also wore the same badge as it created a sense of community. Unfortuately a lot of badges didn't last as the pins broke. We loved doing the 3' crack the codes', after the first one the kids roared with excitement when I said there were 2 more.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We have studied recipes with our favorite veggies, read books about flowers and insects, used measurement and data to measure plant growth, read big books about plants and growing, and art creating gardens.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Wanting to learn more about climate changes and seasons for growing different veggies and growing around the world

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Celebrating favorite veggies in discussion has improved students attitude about eating healthy. Every child has a positive attitude about veggies and said they love carrots the most!

“The garden has gifted my tamariki with the experience to succeed in growing life. They take watching their māra (garden) very seriously and we have established kaitiaki (guardians) over it. We are now leaning to look ahead and design raised gardens in our school and have invited our local new world to come take photos of it once completed.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We learnt about MRSGREN which is a bit further than we thought we could go with our kids, but we did it.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We went the avenue of caring for a plant and the life cycle (Science curriculum)

“In the beginning it felt very overwhelming with the set up, straight after lockdown. But once we began they loved it!! Loved the secrecy in the beginning and the secret coding every week. “This kit had the kids engaged from the start. The secret society, the coded messages and being part of a club. Some did get a little disappointed when they saw the New World promotion, and realised it wasn't 'so secret'. The kit was well organised with us needing little to start. The letter box in the postage box was a great idea. I was lucky that I had a teacher aide who could make it up for me. The badges are a high motivation factor for my students, and the application form was exciting for them. We have a school garden, so this ties in really well. The motto Protect Grow Taste was good because I have some fussy eaters, and they still wanted to be part of the LGL. We have not started growing our seeds yet, as we do not want them to die over the holidays, but the kids can't wait!”
