I feel that this is just at the beginning of the journey as they grow their seedlings, this knowledge will grow too.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We didn’t use the resources as well as we could have in terms of involving them across the curriculum, and we could have done a lot more. It has been a crazy term once again.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The oral language and discussions were by far the high light for me as a teacher. The concern over vegetables becoming extinct like the dinosaurs, was a gem. When planting the seeds, the children were amazed with how the compacted soil grew and enjoyed

Te reo vocabulary building with all the vegetable names, art with drawings of the plants, science with the plant lifecycle, seeds and their different types etc, maths as we measured the plant growth and so much more! Key competencies was at all time high!

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Fruits vs vegetables and looking at the parts of a flower

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? There were lots of conversations about all the different vegetables that we haven't even tried and how that could be some part of their 5 plus a day that they were missing out on.

“This was easily the best school kit we have ever received. So much excitement from the students and teachers for that matter, and so much integrated learning all in one! The students really developed such high interest in the LGL club and were constantly looking over their plants and commenting on the growth. We loved it!”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Using the vegetables to make food (such as the tomato and basil to make pizzas)

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It has promoted gardening skills and plant life cycles over healthy eating as the plants take so long to grow and eat.

“The idea behind this is great. The kids were definitely engaged and were excited to grow their vegetable. I have found it difficult with young children as you have to educate them about watering and I found some children over watered them so their seeds have not grown. I would also like to add that we as teachers do not have hours to spend making the letterbox. It is nice to be environmentally friendly but I hated making that box.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Students have learnt about how to care for a living thing (Science), about why they should eat veges (health), and we have written about our experience of planting them (Writing).

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Planting a variety of other plants and learning about them. growing vegetables and then cooking them, looking at healthy foods and what nutrients they provide our body, learning the te reo names for veges.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Student's didn't know many of these vegetables, so now they are aware of what they are. Students have taken their pledge very seriously, and are keen to try their veges out once they are fully grown.

“A fantastic and fun kit, nicely timed to come out the same time as the public, which encourages chn to collect them at home too. Children have enjoyed the secret messages, and loved having the badge which they wear with pride. They really brought into the secret club idea. They have enjoyed having their own plant to plant from a seed and then look after it and take it home to plant in their own garden. They have been so excited to come to school each day and see what changes there have been overnight and see whose seedling has sprouted. The only slight negative was the hassle of making the letterbox, which was quite full on only to be used once!”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? The learning links predominately to Science and The Living World with some links to the Health Curriculum. The game was a great language activity.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Next term we are looking at the Technology Curriculum. The Little Garden has given me the opportunity to utilise the vegetables and fruit as an authentic problem for my student to solve. Thank you for this great resource.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Vegetables and fruit became cool with the help of the games and growing these in class. Students also learned to identify the plants with the matching game and other resources.

“I loved the whole concept of the league. The plants and supporting resources were fantastic. The children learned about all of the plants, with the help of the characters and matching game. It was super fun and I very much appreciated all resources as did my students.”
