In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We used it as a way to lead into our healthy eating unit. The class were about to learn about new vegetables and it instigated discussion about vegetables they like and ones they would like to try.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Using the code breaker in literacy. Also researched their seedling and the life cycle. Used the seedling characters as inspiration and created visual art.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? This is a great introduction into our garden unit and healthy eating in term 4.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The are more willing to try new food as they found out about them.

“The little garden kits that were sent out were amazing and so engaging. It is hard as a teacher to organise all the components of a gardening unit but the little garden kits make it so easy to just pick it up and run with it. The de-coding activities were engaging for writing and the kids loved having their own seedling and began talking about the ones they had got from New World and planted at home. Whānau loved the learning going on and supported their children with this”

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? bThrough the study of their own vegetable they learnt the nutritional value and shared that with others. Had many emails from parents thanking me for their child now eating a wider range of veggies.

“My class throughly enjoyed this school kit. We used the kit for Inquiry, writing, reading and even Maths. We also integrated it with our SVA kit we received. The students were really excited when New World delivered us a small garden and potting mix for us to replanted our seeds in once they sprouted. We even tried a range of vegetables using the recipes. The students loved chopping up vegetables to make the minetrone soup and many are now eating a different range of vegetables. They loved the challenge in the last secret code.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? All stages of the kit allowed for children to write about shared experiences. This obviously linked to the science curriculum but this was continued into poetry using poems about germination and plant needs. Many of our class readers are also about plants

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Children will extend on current learning in future years as they learn more about plant reproductive systems, processing of veges / fruits and marketing. Many opportunities exist to continue learning related to the gardening aspect.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Making children aware of new and different veges that they might not yet have tried. Each child was able to take home a plant that hopefully they are able to add to their garden at home and eventually eat the results of their learning.

“Little Garden League - Planting vegetables and watching them grow was exciting as our inquiry was on water. We watered the plants daily measuring the water used and put glad wrap over the top of the plants over the weekend which fed them from the condensation on the wrap. The children all acknowledged the importance of the glad wrap fitting loosely on top so that the plants still had air. Encouraged a lot of children in the class to want to grow vegetables at home. Powerful discussion was had about healthy snacks and how fruit, herbs and veges are brain food. The children loved the badges!”
