They learnt a lot about healthy eating and the importance of eating vegetables as well as growing plants and learning about how plants grow. We also learnt about the parts of a plant and completed some fun art activities related to plants.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This was a great tool to accompany a healthy eating focus and learn more about 5 plus a day. Students were encouraged to try veges they had never tried before - we could not believe that students had never eaten lettuce!

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? There were a lot of vegetables that many of the kids had never heard of or tried. It was interesting to see the wide range of vegetables different students had been exposed to.

There has been a lot of excited discussion about what they plan to do with their plants when they take them home.

They've vegetable recognition has gone up massively and has become a part of their every day conversations. This was largely impacted by the Vege Patch Match game that they asked to play every morning! Moreover they now know the timeframes

“The kids have absolutely loved our Little Garden School Kit. We are currently watching all our seeds sprouting out of the soil and some have roots pushing through the bottom of their pots. Every single day there is excitement for our plants and what messages or challenges the Founding Members may have sent us. It has been a big bonding experience for the kids and they can't believe that they are going to be able to take their plants home and share them with their whanau. I hope I'm able to do this kit again with my class next year.”

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It was an eye opener for me about how little they knew prior. It seemed they didn't have much to do with a vegetable prior to it being cooked. I think the attitude and knowledge has really developed.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? This kit provided a fantastic starting point and an excitement to learn about huawhenua.

“My tamariki really enjoyed the code cracking and got so excited about the 'secret' club. We extended our learning by measuring our seedlings and each tamariki researched their vegetable and created a presentation about it. We observed that the corn was different as it sent out strong roots before sprouting. At the end of the term we had a vege feast and all the tamariki rose to the challenge and tried every vegetable! Wonderfull opportunity. Ngā mihinui”

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This has happened for us at the same time as a visit from Life Education Trust which has helped to cement healthy eating conversations both at school and at home as feedback from parents have confirmed.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I bought the Little garden book from the supermarket and when reading, multiple times we have conversations about what vegetables we like and eat.
