“The kids loved the activities, badges etc but we didn't get entirely into the story. They liked learning about photosynthesis with the videos. They just really enjoyed the plants and watching them grow.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Science of plant growing, observation etc Digitech/computational thinking - decoding the message, english - the mail box was a hit! Health - healthy eating etc.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Encourages them to try different veges, have a positive attitude towards veges - eating them and growing them.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? As farm kids they knew many of the typical veges but weren't as familiar with the herbs and borage, pak choy etc.

“Such an exciting way to promote veges -- my kids loved the "intrigued" of the Little Gardens Club and club house, secret messages etc. Loved the game - some were familiar with "spot it" which is similar. Easy to use, everything there, only thing that tricked me was finding the key to the code (on badges) but found a PDF online.”

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We have not covered healthy eating but students have said they are keen to try what they grow, when they are ready.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Students were extremely interested in the different germination times and the sizes of sprouts as they came up.

“We started the kit at the start of term 4 as it arrived late. It was a great way to start the term. The students have learnt about different germination times and have identified their responsibilities in looking after their little garden. We talked about other ways to grow seeds environmentally and have now planted seeds in cardboard toilet rolls, cutting up and folding the bottom to make a base.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? We wrote during writing times. There was so much oral language involved in this project. We also did some planting during Play Based Learning on our science table.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They were very committed to trying new vegetables. Lots of children started writing the teachers letters each night telling us what vegetables they had tried that night at home.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Great to introduce new vegetables to the children that they had never heard of before.

“We love the Little Gardens. The story, the badges and the letter writing to join the club makes for a fantastic writing experience. The children enjoyed every aspect and took the secret very seriously. Unfortunately we had to send our gardens home right on school holidays and it would have been better to plant them earlier and then get some into our school pod. However, the children loved the fact they could plant in their own gardens at home .We have a few left over which we will plant in our school pod early 2023 when we can monitor them over the whole term. Thanks School Kit for a fabulous programme and resource.”

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? there has been a big lift in interest in growing fresh vegetables since covid and this kit supports that.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Some, but some things had limited appeal e.g. kale. In a rural school it is seen as animal food

“Some of the seeds are ones we dont really want, and things like carrots need quite a lot to make a row.”

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? It was brilliant for cross curricular learning, we did health, science, music, english and maths linked to this kit.

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? I think this will encourage more investigation with vegetables and attempts at unknown vegetables particularly the ones that we grew in class.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I was really surprised with the lack of knowledge just with the basic well known vegetable names. This improved hugely.
