In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students were also introduced to the foods that we can eat a lot of, some of and small treats. How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? New entrant students were not able to identify all the vegetables but we looked at a range of vegetable pictures, matched the vegetables with the little plants and now they definitely have a greater number of vegetables that they can identify.
Students were given an opportunity to choose their seedling and worked in little groups to plant the seeding using the soil, water and the seeds, in their little pots. They were able to name their seedlings and and sprouting took place from a few days to a week. They watched it growing and they took it home to put into their gardens. Some students grew little plants while others were not successful. We talked about the reasons for what had happened to their plants and students were keen to share the support that they got from their whanau in growing their plants.
