My class have thoroughly enjoyed planting, observing and discussing their Little Gardens. The joy they got when they saw their seedlings sprout was priceless and even more so when they spotted roots coming through the bottom of the pots! They learnt lots more about vegetables and combining the kit with our sustainability inquiry has worked well, looked at waste and cooking our our food. The fact you could use the box to make the post box made it a great way to re-use it and they kids loved the card game and badges.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This is an ongoing theme (yet to fully cover this in class) and definitely relates to healthy eating options. As mentioned above, the school lunch scheme offers a variety of healthy vegetable options and new tastes for the children.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? A wide range of knowledge amongst the tamariki. Some knew many but not all, others knew just a few. We used books and online pictures to identify the vegetables we were growing. Hopefully by continuing the growing process, the children will see what is pr
We only began planting our seeds in Term 4, but we are well underway now. I work part-time now in a shared junior block. Play-based learning is the focus. Tamariki have chosen to plant with me, write names on pottles (we put each pot into a yoghurt container) and label them. ‘Chief waterers’ have kept the seedlings moist and taught others to do so. Lots of discussion around the differences between the seeds and now the plant variations. They have learnt that plants need the sun and water. It has been entertaining hearing the reactions to the roots coming through the cardboard punnets. ‘Looks like a man’s scraggly white beard.’ Plant vocabulary has been used, describing and comparing the different plants, ie roots/stems/leaves/tall/skinny/ pointy etc. Likes and dislikes of vegetables have been discussed. The children had varying knowledge of the names and tastes of vegetables. It will be interesting to introduce the final products. We have started to transfer the seedlings into bigger pots and then will use our newly built wooden planters next. It has been a great learning experience. The natural ‘gardeners’ have become apparent. Great to see responsibilities being developed but also the joy of new learning and discovery. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to help our tamariki learn.
