In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Because of the timing (end of term/ holidays), this was not a specific focus at school. They do eat the veggies in our class garden, but the range is quite narrow (e.g. lettuce, silver beet, radish, carrot).
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The students used the chart to learn the names of lots of the vegetables. They can identify the veggies in our class garden.
My students loved each having their own Little Garden plant. We already had a class garden (mainly veggies), but this was their own. We followed the instructions to set up the Little Gardens in the classroom. While the seeds were germinating, we had a science focus on how seeds germinate, the life cycle of a plant, photosynthesis, etc. Once the seeds had germinated, we learnt how to transplant the seedlings in the garden. The students could choose whether to plant them in our class garden or take them home, but almost everyone wanted to take them home, which they did before the holidays (end of Term 3), so tasting these veggies was not part of our unit at school. Apart from the Little Gardens themselves (although some of the plants were a bit obscure e.g. borrage), other resources we found most useful were the bunting (to provide a bit of initial excitement) and the chart naming the vegetables. The students were also delighted to receive their badges when they arrived towards the end of our project. I read all of the teaching materials on The Little Garden League website, but didn't find a lot that was relevant for my class inquiry. Instead, I used a wide range of child-centred reading and visual resources with a science focus about plants.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? There was an opportunity to link maths learning in a real life context. The children measured and then graphed the growth of their plants. The children wrote a diary, including diagrams and labels, to show the growth of their plants. Children were introd

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Children have become more aware of the choices they have in their lunch boxes. Some have been able to include a variety of vegetables in their lunch boxes and this has been shared with others in the class. They are all keen to replant their vegetables at
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The children have been fascinated by the variety of vegetables included in this kit. They have enjoyed sharing their knowledge, if their families eat vegetables others do not know. We have discussed the vegetables that are great to bring in their lunch bo
The children were engaged from the beginning - they were fascinated with the origin story and keen to be part of the 'Little Garden League'. They were so excited to receive their individual seeds and pots. Planting was an easy process - thank you! Each day children came into class to look for progress with their own and other's plants. As the plants began to grow they were using rulers to measure their plants. I gave the children a bar graph template that they could label and record their plant's growth.

What cross curricular learning came about as a result of this kit? Oracy / literacy (reading, writing): Allowed to discuss (also poems and songs in French), read, write in both French and English. Health and well-being: self-check of lunchboxes and group discussion on nutritional value of processed food (e.g fruit, puree

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?
In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? As above (cross-curricular)
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Wider range of vegetables students can identify (on photos). We are not yet at a point when students can identify vegetables in an (early) growing stage.
The kits was well presented, and included enough individual resources for the class. It allowed for class-small-group- and individual work / tasks. Due to the nature of the bilingual class (French / English) some preparation was needed - including me finding out the French name of some vegetables (chou frisé, chou chinois, bourrache...).

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Many of our students have paid more attention to what is in their lunch boxes, and those of others as they have been obsessed with identifying undercover LGL agents! We have linked this in with our daily brainfood break to remind kids the importance of ea
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? This definitely helped students to identify more vegetables, and many of them were introduced to vegetables and herbs they had never heard of before. This is a continuous journey though, as we continue to watch our plants grow over this next term (I broug
This kit is absolutely amazing, and came at a perfect time for us as we were exploring how we can be kaitiaki in our community. Our LGL members have taken on the role of being kaitiaki over our seedlings, and have begun taking more notice of the environment around them and what their plants will need to survive. They have also assumed the role of our health kaitiaki too, and take great pains to remind each other and their parents what healthy brain food snacks are and why. I thought that my kids might have been a bit too old to get into some of the activities suggested, but I was so wrong, and they absolutely loved it...even some of our 'tougher' boys! Our kids decided to take a slightly different approach to the kit in the end by using the seedlings to conduct some science experiments to find out how different environmental factors impact how well a seedling grows!

Absolutely LOVE this kit. This is my 2nd time using this kit and it never disappoints! The kids were all engaged with the learning and magic behind it. Every student was able to participate no matter their learning levels of past experiences with growing seeds.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our school promoted healthy eating. This kit reinforced our kaupapa.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The "Class Photo" was a great resource. Students often referred to it to identify the vegetables they didn't know/recognise.
Students were very hyped up with the application process. They loved the clubhouse buy in and the badges, and were excited about growing their own vegetables. Was great to see the wide variety of seedlings and the students learnt about vegetables they hadn't heard of before. Unfortunately the challenges didn't really maintain the original hype.

Again - another excellent kit!! It sparked interest and generated lots of meaningful discussions throughout a wide age group (Years 3-10). The learning translated into so many areas of our current learning eg Economics: saving money by growing vegetables, why do they cost so much in the supermarket? etc, Maths: how tall/wide will these plants grow, how far apart/down do I have to plant the seedlings? Food Tech: what exactly am I growing?, what does it taste like?, how do I cook it?, what are the nutritional benefits? I would love to have this kit every single year. I have used it with children from many different ages groups/abilities, in the classroom and as part of our Gardening Club. Thanks so much, School Kit!
