In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It would be great to get the kits earlier before a holiday break so they can grow at school.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The children became aware of the names of lots of new vegetables

“This kit was great for introducing many of the children to new vegetables they hadn't heard of or tried. They enjoyed growing the plants and were often found in conversations discussing the changes they were noticing as the plants were growing, and delighted to take the plants home, and finally to try the foods. This kit also linked in well with our Health topic of healthy eating.”

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Students were more willing to try new vegetables or foods that they were reluctant to try in the school lunches when they could identify them as vegetables we grew in the kits.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Students were able to see the way vegetables look before they are prepared, and look at the difference in the way different vegetables grow e.g. under the ground, tick whole vegetable or pick part.

“Students enjoyed watching their plants grow and loved being able to take them home to share with whanau.”

How effective was this kit in promoting healthy eating in your classroom?

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? They recognised more vegetables and were happy to try eating them. Because we worked as a team they encouraged each other to try them. I saw an improvement in lunch boxes as the tamariki said they asked for vegetables to be added as well as fruit.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I was amazed at how well my new entrant tamariki learned the names of these vegetables.

“What a fantastic resource this is. My tamariki were engaged with the activities and took on the responsibility of growing something of their own. The first thing they would do each morning was check on their plant and make sure it had water if it needed it. They had a sense of pride in their plant, talking to others (including any adult who happened to pass by) about the stages of growth and that it was 'real' food that they were growing. This unit linked beautifully with our Health unit as well.”

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Some improvement on identification of vegetables however a longer growing period was needed.

“Good kit overall and the badges were well recieved. Some confusion once signedup and unfortunately and the kit took much longer than expected to arrive in the classroom. Children engaged in the growing process well although many struggled with the range of vegetables intially.”
