In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The willingness to try something they had not tried before (some not keen though). Understanding that their are many nutrients in vegetables to help our bodies.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I want to say probably 50/50 - would need a lot of repitition for some students to retain - but on the flip side students were very confident about their individual plants.
This was a wonderful resource to receive. Many children did not even know some of the vegetables or herbs that were in the kit. They enjoyed being able to write about what they did when they planted their seeds and then having to look after them. They were amazed at the difference between times of growing and how some grew faster than others. They measured their plants and we created very simple graphs to monitor their growth. Then of course came the taste test. Some children were reluctant to try new things (very fussy eaters) but most were happy to give it a go - they also shared with their parents the new food they tried and liked through a letter to their parents.

This was a great kit. The children loved submitting their reasons to be in the gardening league. And we’re delighted with the badges they received. Some are still wearing them at school. I had one child who began our expert planter and helped the other children plant their seeds. We have some vege plots at school that we’re able to plant our seedlings out into with our older buddy class. The weather as been a bit up and down this term so some we have slow growth since planting out. But the kids check regularly on them. And will notice the growth over the up coming holidays. Thank you for this kit opportunity.

A great kit! My students loved having a space set up in the classroom to watch their seedlings grow. The bunting, little cardboard clubhouse and 'class photo' were very useful. Having those meant that I did not have to worry about making too many other resources to go to the little garden corner. I had to modify the application letter to ensure all my students could complete it independently. They absolutely loved sending the application and getting a badge.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This led to many discussions on food and what we should be eating, so I would say there was definitely an improved student awareness.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The children learned about vegetables that they had never heard of before. They were trying to read all the names of the vegetables, which was super cute.
My children were so excited when the Garden League box arrived at school. We discussed everything that was in the box and this led to a wonderful discussion on fruit and vegetables, which led on to vegetable and fruit songs and videos and books to learn more. I took little groups at a time to plant the seeds- which was a fantastic, relaxing activity for a Friday afternoon. I posted photos on our ClassDojo page and the whanau were thrilled too. The excitement kept building as the children watched the little sprouts coming up. I had to send the plants home earlier than I would have liked as it was end of term 3-school holidays. But I know that quite a few of my class still report back in our news circle of how their plants are still growing. It was an amazing experience for the children (and the resources that came along with it were super too). I have enough left to use this again next year.
