How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Definitely great for generating questions about our local community and what stories can be told. The kit encouraged us to look in our own back yard to see if there were similar/differences with what we were finding out.

We did a history of Porirua unit last year and lots of background information was supplied. This was a very similar setup with lots of different resources to promote students critical thinking about

I feel more confident as all the resources are easy to access and in depth background information supplied. Also I enjoyed using a broad scale of different media. There was so much information, and using different resources, to promote critical thinking.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Loved this kit and it’s Kaupapa. It has definitely built my confidence to understand multiple stories about the same place, and how to dig deeper into local stories with students.

“My students loved the creativity of resources and depth of research and work that had been put into creating them. They learned valuable grit and perseverance skills through their own research processes and the kit encouraged curiosity and questioning of local history. The trickiest aspect of this kit was several of my students found the level of language on the site was too difficult for their literacy abilities; and it was not easy to scaffold this and differentiate without taking away the student-driven independence or completely modifying the content on the site (not easy without building own site to allow students to complete tasks that looked the same as others were completing). It would perhaps be great to have some stories pitched at a much lower literacy level so teachers could guide their students to appropriate tasks.”

I still personally have a lot to learn about Aotearoa Histories and the curriculum but this kit provides me with a huge amount of material that I will be able to use in a range of situations. I think it is fantastic that the stories were developed in collaboration with iwi/whānau/community. “I am super impressed with the kit and it is clear that a huge amount of work has gone into developing it - thank you School Kit and the Ministry of Education. I used this kit to support our Term 3 inquiry on Migration & Mobility. I found the website too challenging for my Year 4 students to use independently. Instead we investigated a couple of stories that tied in with our Inquiry topic, including using suggested resources such as the Aotearoa History Show.”

“This is an excellent resource to explore New Zealand histories. My year 5/6 class needed some scaffolding to help them get started. We went through one of the locations together before students worked independently.”
