How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The kit provides a good template to explore local history and has given us lots of ideas on how to proceed. Getting the time to further develop local history resources is an issue.

“A very difficult term meant that I did not use this kit as fully as I would have liked. I dipped in and out of it with students and found that using individual stories spaced throughout the term was useful for keeping students engaged. It was a large resource for me to get my head around and the fact that it arrived after the term started meant that it put pressure on me to understand what the unit had to offer and how I could incorporate it into the teaching and learning programme. The kit being so reliant on devices for the students proved to be problematic. Students were often off task and having paper-based resources for those students/times would have been useful.”

“The children enjoyed the items they could hold and look at. Lots of engaging discussions. The children really got into finding out about history and having some items to actually look at, touch and hold brought it to life!”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes...in collaboration with mana whenua this is already underway...it is a long process as the resources are scarce and the knowledge holders are extremely busy.

Exploring 'Protest' specifically around Te wiki o te reo maori...bringing in whanau perspective was extremely valuable and experiences around own involvement in protests of ranging scales was empowering.

“A very exciting, topical, stimulating and adaptable kit. The range covered is extensive and provided many avenues to explore. It has given me a strong framework to work within while I build up my personal knowledge and capability with the content. I particularly liked the flexibility offered within it. The ability to introduce topics that were relevant to student and whanau interests made it easy to integrate into planning. The fabulous artifacts and website content were a real bonus, saving so much time not having to collate resources. They were all handily organised and accessible.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We have started looking at some of the older buildings and enquire about when they were built and what their names mean--this has allowed students to apply their learning on other units as well.

“What an amazing kit! Took me a bit to work how to use the bits and pieces in the kit. Once I had narrowed it down to one story (that actually fitted in nicely with our term focus) it all fell into place. The kids had so much fun exploring the pepeha, learning how to use an atlas and other reference material. There are so many stories in the kit it is certainly going to be an extremely useful resource to hang on it and use again and again.”
