How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? As a kaiako, I am very motivated to use a similar model for my local area. It has led me to begin a journey into Wairarapatanga, learning the places and stories of importance to our place.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? My students have enjoyed the challenge of deciphering the whakatauki. This has been a steep learning curve for them but a worthwhile one.

This kit has so much information and the resources lead to such in depth studies by the students. I thought we would look at the whole kit this term but we really only delved into Ahi Ka and began an in depth investigation into Michael Joseph Savage, social justice and what it may have meant at this point in Aotearoa's history. Simple changes in our country such as the impact of the railways as a major form of transport and the depth of feeling shown by the population towards Mr Savage seemed foreign to the children but they were able to make links through this to the passing of Queen Elizabeth and the reactions of the British people. This is a wonderful kit and we will continue to use it for the forseeable future.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We are fortunate in that we have already done some preexisting mahi in our local area. We are always looking at ways to improve this and continue to reflect and change our learning and EOTC to reflect this.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? We have been able to cover the areas within Ngāi Tahu and hoping to spend more time with specific tauira from their iwi to discover more of the stories in their area.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Didn’t really help to be honest, just too complex and not presented in a way that was easy to navigate for teachers (we are all experienced)

It was just SO complicated. In some ways it’s great there was so much content but the way it was presented was just absolutely impossible to follow - it took 5 teachers about an hour to make heads or tails of it and even then we just ended up giving up to be honest.

An awesome range of resources that could be used in diverse ways. We only took one part and delved into that and for the students to find further information with the online resources.

This kit has really opened up the minds of my North Canterbury students. They loved that History is combined with digital fluency where they can discover stories through different mediums (written, oral, visual). They were very excited to go through the box of treasures that supported the learning material as well working together to decode the te reo translation for the passcode of location. I could definitely see a lot of hard work has gone into creating this kit which has sparked major curiosity and learning within my students.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? This model linked really well to the new NZ Aotearoa Histories curriculum and could easily be adapted to suit individual school needs. It also allowed for children to add in their own areas of interest and learn at their own pace.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? It added an element of safety and reassurance when sharing stories that weren't essentially our own or well known. Knowing these were created in collaboration of the true holders of the knowledge and stories. It was encouraging to learn about stories that

This is an incredibly well put together resource, at times I found the tangible resources overwhelming - where and how do I use this best? The time and thought put into the resource is incredible. The children enjoyed researching the individual postcards, however at times our Struggling year 7 and 8s found the amount of text overwhelming. This resource was easily adapted for whole class, large and small groups and individual based learning. Children could enter with very little or a lot of existing knowledge and build on what they already know.

Hi. We have really enjoyed using the kit this term. We focused on the Chinkon card for our guided inquiry for all three classes to start with. The students and teachers were impressed at the ease of the unpacking of the learning and the resources that went with it. Two of the classes went on to create old style newspapers to reflect the events at Featherston Camp and reflect the fashions and style of the time. The three classes are off to Lake Ōkataina Camp next term for our end of year camp. The area is rich with Māori history and quite a few unique events happened there. So, we have created a 'Something Happened Here"inquiry to work on before we go! Thank you for the fabulous resource!
