How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We started with the 'claim' story which was local to our area and a lot of children started off really engaged in this. I wouldn't feel as comfortable exploring more history myself, but knowing these were real stories made it easy.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I felt confident at the beginning but as we didn't get far into the unit it hasn't really increased. If I was to work through the whole unit I would think differently.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? It was great to know that the stories were legit and had been told first hand. If we had gotten further into this unit, I would have felt very comfortable sharing these stories.

“I thought this was a fantastic kit! I can tell a lot of time and effort went into the planning and creating of this kit. Both myself and my class really enjoyed the physical aspect of the kit with the different parts that they could explore and look at. Initially, it took me quite a while to get my head around how the kit actually worked and what path to take but the online community was such a help. We started following one story as a whole class as a way to introduce the topic as there was a story that was relevant and local to us. It started off okay but found that some students were far more engaged and interested than others. Some students just weren't interest at all and some found it really hard to get through as there was a lot of reading and watching videos etc. Even in small groups, it seemed to be my higher ability students doing majority of the work as some just simply couldn't. We never got past the initial story that we started as it just became too difficult. I still think this is a great kit but it is more suited for level 4 or above....”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Gave me the confidence to explore. The materials were designed in such a way as to be explored by anyone from novice to expert. The depth depended on the individual.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I have only used one of the areas from the kit so far but intend to use more next year. I can see how as I gain in confidence I could use this model in the future.

“My class absolutely loved this kit and I was very impressed with the resources in it. The tokens were exciting and the information was laid out really well and easy to understand and follow. We did an activity where my students chose an item they were drawn too. They had to use their research skills to find out more about the event. They were engaged and having lots of fun.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Our school has a few local stories that most of our teachers know. Getting these stories told with a connection to iwi and our local community would be powerful. Using the same model is a great idea that could be pursued.

“The physical kit was fabulous and my students were curious to explore the stories and meanings related to the objects. The pepeha was a great way to have clues to unlock where the place where something has happened. My students were challenged by the research aspect related to some tasks and needed to go further with their own searches to find information for some of the cards. There was so much to explore with this kit and I envisage using it again with a lot more teacher guidance. Thanks for another fabulous resource School Kit.”

“An amazing resource with an incredible amount of content! I allowed my year 7/8 class to each pick one place card and explore that area. My more capable students were able to explore the content and have created Google Slides of their findings that are college level work. However, lots of my students found even the Tasks 1 and 4 (designed for year 5/6 students) quite challenging and needed lots of teacher support. In hindsight I would work through one place card with the majority of my students next time.”
