“The learners loved the treasure hunt form of this unit and the different artifacts that made up this kit. The conversations were high and the stories prompted a lot of chat. We really enjoyed this unit as a way to grow our knowledge of Aotearoa NZ histories.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? At our school we were lucky to have implemented some local history curriculum already with a specialist teacher. Students and teachers learnt about local stories. Using this model will help to strengthen these stories through the diverse range of mediums

“What a way to introduce the Aotearoa Histories Curriculum into my teaching programme! This is a cool, captivating and comprehensive kit. Students were engaged and interested, sharing their discoveries with each other. We chose to work in pairs/small groups exploring the same place. We worked through the first place together to start, to help students to navigate and understand the process. This kit then caters to all learners, with students able to work on the higher (or lower) tasks. Many opportunities to link to other learning areas, students were able to identify and use the skills from our Literacy learning.”

Awesome to have a range of stories beyond the knowledge of the classroom teachers, in an easily accessible and teachable format. Loved how it challenged the kids to use their te reo knowledge as part of the process.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Great at helping me wrap my head around the scope. It’s so huge and not knowing where to start is daunting. This kit really allows a lot of guidance in that regard.

“Great. However took a while to wrap my head around all the content and needed a LOT of pre-planning. Kids really enjoyed learning about the topics though. Will hopefully try something earlier on in the year so it doesn’t get term 4’ed.”

“My class absolutely loved this kit and I was very impressed with the resources in it. The tokens were exciting and the information was laid out really well and easy to understand and follow. We did an activity where my students chose an item they were drawn too. They had to use their research skills to find out more about the event. They were engaged and having lots of fun.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We started with the 'claim' story which was local to our area and a lot of children started off really engaged in this. I wouldn't feel as comfortable exploring more history myself, but knowing these were real stories made it easy.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I felt confident at the beginning but as we didn't get far into the unit it hasn't really increased. If I was to work through the whole unit I would think differently.

“I thought this was a fantastic kit! I can tell a lot of time and effort went into the planning and creating of this kit. Both myself and my class really enjoyed the physical aspect of the kit with the different parts that they could explore and look at. Initially, it took me quite a while to get my head around how the kit actually worked and what path to take but the online community was such a help. We started following one story as a whole class as a way to introduce the topic as there was a story that was relevant and local to us. It started off okay but found that some students were far more engaged and interested than others. Some students just weren't interest at all and some found it really hard to get through as there was a lot of reading and watching videos etc. Even in small groups, it seemed to be my higher ability students doing majority of the work as some just simply couldn't. We never got past the initial story that we started as it just became too difficult. I still think this is a great kit but it is more suited for level 4 or above....”
