“I have really enjoyed using this kit with my class. It took some navigating sometimes, but that added to the learning. My akonga all got something from it, in one form or another, it is a beautiful resource that will last for years to come - assuming the website stays up!”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It is great to have resources and visuals provided for students which gave them more confidence to talk to something - spark their interest. I could possibly use this model once planning of curriculum is put in place.

“Hi there, thank you so much for such a great resource. We were waiting to engage our students once our school curriculum was in place for 2023 and we had a clear vision moving forward for the New Zealand Histories Curriculum. We had looked at the photos and students undertook some research to find out more about them. It was more of a discussion and breaking up into groups and doing some research. We seemed to have run out of time as there was so much on during the year.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We are fortunate to have a connection with our local iwi and have organised guided hikoi through places of significance for Te Kawerau a Maki. This definitely reinforced that we were on the right track.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It was incredible powerful to use artefacts to start the process - student engagement was high and the stories that supported them built the momentum of wanting to find out more.

“Our tamariki absolutely loved the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories kit! It was a fantastic way to start our learning journey. they enjoyed being able to handle the artifacts! There were many exciting discussions, but did struggle a bit with how to work our way through the resource - maybe a sequence for how to roll it out would help.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I am still a little unsure to be honest everyone I speak to has a different way of teaching what is being asked - it can be overwhelming. I will stick to this model until told otherwise.

“This School Kit was incredible. The artefacts were a great way to get the students engaged in the history as they could touch them and actually see what would have been. The kiwi photos were of some places the children had seen or visited which caught their attention and made this project interesting for them from the get go. With the new curriculum coming in i hope to use this resource again in term 1 of next year to inspire their learning about our beautiful country.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We live in a particularly rich historical area in an old part of ChCh so it would be really interesting to replicate the model and for children to connect with their communiy

I have definitely learnt a lot from all the stories and has raised my awareness of what I didn't/don't know. I feel I now have more knowledge to build on going forward into delivering the curriculum.

It was interesting to explore those 'hidden' stories of important events that have happened around us. We have sought out a couple of sites that are reasonably close to our area and enjoyed the adventure.
