How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Absolutely yes I am hoping that as a Whanau Group (Y5/6) we will be able to begin this again in 2023 (X6 classes). This model is fabulous in that giving clues keeps the students engaged.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? In knowing the stories were developed in collaboration with iwi/whanau/community made the stories authentic. My students also felt a connection with the characters who were portrayed and kept talking about what they had done to their whanau.

“I found the kit fabulous but the instructions not very clear. A co-worker had already done the kit and advised i.e the site left side for my Y5s. Also at the beginning of the unit I got my students to work in pairs with the whole class working on the first 2 cards (of my choice - close to our school) together. Once accustomed to what they were doing they then chose their own postcards. I am going to add some comments from my students as fols Dylan - I like how I had to figure it out by using the clues and how we didn't get the answers straight away. Cameron - I liked the facts about NZ that helped me to find out where and what happened. I also learn what was going on in the world at the same time.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It is difficult where we are based. Being on Te rakipaewhenua (the north shore) where our iwi here are rather transient and uninvolved, we have a long way to go. But good first steps.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? This was a great springboard for developing questioning skills and looking at perspectives. It has raised awareness in students that history is everywhere; that all places have stories and that they can be very diverse.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Using the kit, I had lots to draw on in advance. I could preview what my students were going to find, so I could be well prepared and ready to guide their questioning for further exploration. We loved the box of artefacts too. My students got quite excite

“A fabulous resource that enables students to explore deeply. There is lots of variety and students can be guided through the use of the website, while feeling like they are in control of their learning when using it in pairs or small groups. It is great for developing questioning skills, critical thinking and examining different perspectives and world views. It generated lots of discussion. The box of artefacts was a treasure chest for my students too. They loved being directed to find an item, and explaining how it fitted in with events, people and places. This kit really helped make the ANZH curriculum seem real, and relevant, to my students.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We do a bit already but this has given us some ideas of how we can better do it. Our local museum will be interested I think in coming on board and our Iwi is developing cultural knowledge resources which could be adapted to this style too.
