How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It's made me realise not only the importance of local history, but how much history every community has. I think that while it can be difficult to connect with kaumātua, it's important to try.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I've rated myself quite low in terms of my confidence, simply because I don't feel I had enough time to properly engage with the content; it's so well developed, and so information-rich, that my class couldn't do it justice. I need a year!

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? It meant a lot, both for the students and for myself, knowing the kit was put together in such close collaboration with iwi/whānau/community. We understood the stories to be genuine, and with a depth to them that outside sources would not have provided.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Yes this model is excellent. We are soon to embark on exploring our local area.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Has increased my confidence manyfold. The resources provide an example of engaging learning activities that I feel I could use as examples for my own planning.

“Have not completed this kit but found the photos and stories linked to photos very engaging for both myself and the students. There is lots of NZ history here that would be lost if this kit had not been made. The School Kits are focused on some little known history that is still very important for all us to know and understand. This history shapes our future and especially the future of our students”

Definitely - as I said it piqued our interest in other events that may have happened in our community - or people in our community that have been part of historical events (ie we knew of a person who had been on the Wahine when it crashed!). I really like

“This was such an amazing kit to get the children to look at the histories of NZ. For us, we really honed into our local history of Jack Lovelock - this had more buy in from the children as Timaru Boys High School is here and they know it well. They also have a high interest into Adolf Hitler and World War 1 due to other curriculum areas that had connections to this (ie literacy - novel studies). Using the online tools to look at the places/artefacts was a hit and we all learnt so much - it actually peaked their interest to look further into our local history and see who else was famous and follow their timelines. We loved how easy the lesson plan format was to follow and the children found the artefacts very interesting. Easily one of the best things we looked at to introduce the children to our NZ Histories - they are buzzing and are freely using all the other artefacts/cards to investigate NZ further.”
