“The 'Something Happened Here' kit was a great success with my Year 6 students. Teachers and students engaged with excitement and wonder as we journeyed around Aotearoa discovering unfamiliar places and significant historical events. We totally recommend this kit as a prequel to the NZC History learning or even alongside the new curriculum as children love an adventure that exposes them to fresh understanding.. because something quite wonderful happened here!”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I am 4th generation born in this area so I was already interested in the local history and stories and have been actively trying to find more about the pre-European history. It is good to have new resources to investigate.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? This kit has helped, but I have also been learning about it from other sources. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say the kit has supported my other learning and allowed me to put it into practise.

I was interested to read the local stories and to compare them to my own knowledge. While not always completely accurate, there were also parts where it was interesting to read stories from someone else's perspective.

“This kit was an amazing resource, but I felt it was a little beyond the understanding of my Y4 students. I focused on local stories. However I intend to use the kit as I lead PD on the ANZH curriculum in a couple of weeks to demonstrate some of the structure as well as some resources available.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? One thing in this kit was that there wasn't a story for our local area. However, after exploring a few histories, we branched off into a historical time in our local area. The kit was great to get us started.

“The amount of time, care, and research that has gone into this kit is phenomenal. I was overwhelmed with the level of reading when I initially started the kit - could I suggest a video or webinar as a walk through for teachers of the resources, how to use the kit, the website etc? The resources are so engaging and brought about a lot of conversation with my class of year 6 students, making connections and making predictions. I did find that it was challenging at times to maintain excitement and engagement around the activities on the website, however, cannot fault the level of information and detail provided around every moment of history. The options were endless and there was no doubting whether there was something available that met the interest of any student. This is certainly a resource I will keep tucked away for the years to come, I may just adapt these tasks to increase the engagement levels of my students.”
