How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It has provided a great model for my students to begin an inquiry into the history of our local area. They could use the same process to create resources or do research using the same archives.

It means so much knowing that the stories were developed in collaboration with iwi/whanau/community. It makes the stories genuine and it feels like we have been given permission to learn about the stories and their history.

The topographic photo's really challenged the students to think more about their own whanau and tipuna. Students need to be able to make personal connections or place themselves or whanau into a context in these stories. e.g what would your Great grandpar

“The resources were incredible. I was fascinated before the teaching took place. It set the unit up with some really interesting avenues to explore and future directions to take aspects of social history. They aligned really well with the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum and I was able to link it into newcomers to Aotearoa as we have a diverse number of cultures within our school classroom and community..”

In future years the hope is to get more time for this unit to allow a branching out into our local area as well.

I feel the model is good but for Year 6 but the tasks were pretty sophisticated and sometimes they were not interesting for this level. We tried to get the students to work in pairs independently, setting them up on Google Slides and they still required a

“This will be a great kit (Something Happened Here) to use in the future. The children (and myself) found it pretty hard to navigate this first time through. Some events and tasks were easier and more interesting for this age group than others. It was pretty difficult to get my head around many of the tasks but having completed it once, future times should be easier.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I have spoken to our local library about exploring the area and to find resources for our local stories. I do think that hands on experiences in the local area will enhance student engagement also.

Having authentic stories, that were collaborated on by local iwi and community is so important in the ANZH curriculum and an area that has been hard to find resources for. So this kit is so valuable and so timely.

“Our akonga have been so motivated to explore the stories and have loved the access to multiple media resources that are easy to find and use. It has reinforced the understanding of looking at perspectives in stories and challenged both learners and teachers to explore their biases when learning about events and stories. The included Teacher tools are invaluable - ways to ensure that akonga are gaining the most from their learning opportunities. We have focussed on our area but will continue to use the cards going forward to explore stories and issues from the country.”
