Knowing this kit had community/iwi/whanau input was valuable because teachers and students can be assured of the relevance and accuracy of the pepeha. The cultural aspects are also verified because of this.

“I completed feedback in Term 2. The kit and resources were fantastic. I would teach this using one place to help the students gain experience using the newspaper online and other links before giving them individual or small group places to work through.”

We have two different iwi in our community and knowing that there are stories and histories behind the picture was engaging and was good to have conversations about these as well as provoke chat about where students had been and what they knew.

This kit has definitely supported my learning journey in delivering the Aotearoa Histories kit. “Wow! My kids and I just loved this kit. They enjoyed researching and finding out more about NZ Histories and were fascinated with some of their findings. My learners took it upon themselve to share some of their learning with other members of our school community through our radio station and via flip grids. The resources were amazing and my kids saw these as inspiration to take their learning to deeper levels. My students also shared their learning with their whanau and this inspired a couple of parents to discuss their knowledge with their children which was brought back to the classroom.”

“Overall this is a fantastic kit to form a broad and in depth base to teaching the new Aotearoa Histories curriculum. Our students loved that there were history events which linked to their identity in so many ways, be it place based or interest based. We especially appreciated that key stakeholders were involved in the development and accuracy of the kit. This meant as teachers we were confident in the relevancy of the information and ability to provide a perspective from those impacted directly by the events. We got this kit for Term 3 and have developed a long term plan for teaching this kit over a 2 year cycle. We have been disappointed that there are still quite a few sections where stakeholders only have the phrase: "Check back soon - this section will be updated this week."and these have been this way for the past few months. Just as students and us teachers really value these sections. The digital resources are increadible. We are working to make the kit work with minimal student devices. Thus far the conversations have been increadible and students have been taking these conversations home and coming back to school with research or enthusiasm to look into questions that have arisen for them on further thought and reflection of the content covered in class. A great outcome using this kit.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? The students enjoyed using the website but the physical items/photos in the kit generated a lot of interest and discuss between the students. We had made a timeline for our village and they liked to relate those to our timeline and what Rongotea was like

“I found the kit quite confusing initially and it took me along time to figure out how to use it or at least how it was intended to be used. However, after many hours and discussions with my colleagues who were also using the kit, I did manage to get something out of it for the kids. the students were engaged by the mystery solving/clue decoding that was part of the learning with this kit. However, they were quite disappointed that none of the stories included were from closer to where we are. We studied our own local area prior to beginning the kit and many of them wanted to carry on focusing on our village history and Palmerston North history.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Having a relationship with our local hapu, we are very fortunate to have our local stories that are already taught in our school. We also have opportunities to learn other stories from different areas of our town.
