How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Absolutely. We have just had a school wide curriculum move from PYP (IB) to a more locally based curriculum, using experts and resources already in our community. This unit has been a great model of how we can better delivery that.

We are lucky enough to have input from both our local marae which is a nga hau e wha, and the local iwi which is Ngāti Pāoa. “Even though we have been lucky enough to learn through quite a few school kits in the past, we have really enjoyed and been surprised by how engaged the students were throughout the unit. History has often been a subject that we have not done justice through inquiry teaching so it was great to be able to introduce the kids to the subject in such a positive way.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? This was a bit difficult as the kit didn't apply to our local area, however we did investigate our local flaxmill and other areas in Gore and Riverton.

It added to the authenticity of each place and wonderful to have a bicultural aspect. In fact the inclusion of the range of ethnicities was really important overall. Esp with the chinese immigration.

“We carried our Inquiry over two terms. It was wonderful to have the whakapapa of each place behind each postcard. The artefacts were amazing for the students to be able to touch. This was a spring board for our questioning focus and the curiosity that was generated was so cool to see.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? This inspired us to get out to small local museums and communities, even visiting a flax mill at a nearby township of Riverton.

The stories we have in our area are considered some our most valuable taonga so to have these shared with us we considered to be a real gift. The kids definitely took that on board too.

“This resource was absolutely incredible - put together with attention to detail and clearly loads of love for the content. I was blown away by some of the content in the stories that I explored with my students and the hands-on pieces of resource in the kit helped to make some of the stories tangible, more real. My only criticism I would make is that it was very challenging for my Year 7 and 8 students. Even my most capable found navigating through the detail of the stories difficult - although some have asked if they can keep searching through the site. Perhaps ideals for Year 9/10 students.”

Although I have a history degree, this kit was so useful because the resources were all gathered together for me and were aimed at the right level. The level for Year 5 children was a little challenging at times, but I was able to scaffold those children

“This was a really detailed and comprehensive kit, with something for everyone. It was great to be able to find stories that related to our local area and to see the children develop their understanding of the events that happened there. Powerful learning happened through sequencing events and discussing the different perspectives of the people involved.”
