Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit It is always a bit tricky, but once you get past the initial difficulty then discussion flows quite well.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? The knowledge they have of the internet and things that I still don't know as an adult.

“It was a bit scary at first, but once I broke it down it was a very good tool for learners. My kids really enjoyed the marbles where we would come up with a question together and cast our votes. It was very interesting to see how many people had voted for something that had either happened to them online or something that they had done online. For example: Being unkind to someone or chatting to someone they did not know.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I assumed the kids were a lot more naive or thoughtless about their online activity than they really were. Although a few kids were very 'silly' online, many students were aware of the permanence of content on the internet, and the importance of privacy.

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I didn't realise the number of students who were exposed and understood much of the adult content that they come across online.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit This linked so well with our Health and Sexuality programme so the kids were really receptive and open to listening to me and using the tools we were given to discuss the concepts. I have a good relationship with the students so we didn't find it awkward.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Initially they believed that there were more dangers in the physical world and didn't consider the online world such a threat. Their perceptions began to change as we moved through the kit.

“This has linked perfectly with our Health and sexuality programme for our Year 8 students. Such an important concept to learn about, that you are one person, no matter whether you are online or in the physical world.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? My kids are involved in more online content than I thought they would be. Their knowledge of the online world is much wider than I thought.

Lots of kids said that they spoke to other people online but didn't consider them strangers because they have chatted for a while. I thought that this thinking wouldn't have been as pr

“This kit facilitated some really in-depth discussions in our class. There were many activities that made our class really think hard about what we are doing online and why. Coming back to the theme of being the same person both online and off really stuck with my kids and this language has been used regularly in our class.”

“The STEM teacher also used this kit so I had to collaborate with her on how I would then use it as well. What we did in the classroom definitely was valuable for the students.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? The marbles were a great way to vote without fear that people knew who said what. It allowed me to see that not as many as expect had experienced uncomfortable situations online - 0 had seen images that were unsolicited and uncomfortable - which surprised

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? It didn't really because as a mum of a child the same age as the children I teach - I'm very aware of the realities of what our kids are exposed to online and is one of the many reasons I felt so strongly about teaching the unit.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I had a situation with one of the scenario cards which talked about a girl getting her period - this was an awkward moment as one of my 9 year old girls had no idea what a period was and openly asked - so I had to talk to the class about this on the fly -

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? There were quite vast differences in the kinds of boundaries different students had at their homes, this seemed to link in with how informed their parents were.

“This was a great kit and very much what our students needed - we are finding that less and less our parents are informed and many of our children have quite loose boundaries at home due to lack of parent information about the types of activity that so-called child friendly sites have enabled. We had lots of great conversations as a class as a result of the acitvities and I was glad that we made this the focus unit of term 4 so we could really give the lessons the time they deserve to go into depth and really get the kids engaged. Highly recommend and am looking forward to using this resource again. Such important learning for our tamariki.”
