“This kit is high quality, well thought-out and very useful for teaching safe behaviours. It has some interesting, innovative approaches that keep the children engaged.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I became more aware of the students who aren't allowed to be online very much as you could see them become awkward because they couldn't always join in with the conversations.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? How much access all my students have at home and how little parents are monitoring what their students are doing on devices. How many young students are on social media and how they are using this to communicate with each other out of school hours.

“Some of the resources didn't hit the spot with my class especially in relation to offline learning. We had already done the keeping ourselves safe health module so it was a little like we were rehashing the same thing. The online/offline boundaries sheet was difficult to use - would have been great to have an example to give me some ideas.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? My perceptions weren’t changed, I had picked up the differences during COVID Lockdown and it was good to reference back to this when parents weren’t always watching what they got up to and children were online a lot more.

Please describe your comfort level in delivering the more mature content within this kit I have delivered digital technologies before so I had a bit of background knowledge however we had a student teacher teaching parts of it and she found it really well laid out and easy to use.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? It surprised me how passionate they got about ‘the right thing to do.’ They were all wanting to share their opinions and stories eagerly.

“This kit was great. It got the children thinking about the difference between their online and offline boundaries, also hearing what boundaries other children have. The scenarios brought about rich discussion and debate for the best outcomes to each, highlighting the different online rules for each child at home. This kit was well worth it for the children, they all had digital ‘stories’ to tell and it brought internet safety right into the forefront.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I thought teaching the kaupapa pornography would be really difficult and awkward. However using the advertisement that pops up regularly helped unpack the message well. Some of my younger students hadn’t understood the message they were trying to portray

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Many of my class had experiences of online bullying in various ways. Some didn’t even realise that they had also been a bully with their throw away comments and reactions. It wasn’t until they looked at the big picture from various perspectives that they

“The messages in this kit were very powerful. 90% of my 9-11yr old Māori class use a social networking site that they supposably are too young to have. Tik tok, Instagram and Snap Chat being the most popular. We had thorough conversations using that’s out of line cards. Many of my class would share experiences and it was a safe environment to do so. I could see my Tamariki thinking about other perspectives with some of their actions that they think are harmless, it made them look at various scenarios from a different point of view. We discussed the pornography advertisements that come on television and my Tamariki understood the message it conveyed. My Tamariki also had the opportunity to approach me if they had questions or concerns about anything related to this kaupapa. That’s as far as we went though as some of my Tamariki are quite young. This was an excellent unit to teach when you have built Whānau relationships with the Tamariki. I would 100% use this kit each year to discuss online etiquette. Way to go team school kit. Once again giving NZ kaiako the tools to educate using real life topical situations. Ngā mihi nui ki a kotou mō tō kaupapa mahi.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? The marble was a good activity but because of some immature behaviour from a few students it disrupted their thinking and some of my quieter students shut down. I would like for them to do this activity again without some of the disruptive students.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? Some good discussions were very interesting. I was surprised by the level of content some students bought up.

“For the most part the kit was excellent. The information on Facebook was very helpful. However, I have a year 7 &; 8 class and they found for the most part interesting. Although, the year 8s found it a little boring and were quite immature. I found it difficult to keep them engaged and to be considerate of other people's views and opinions. Thankfully, we have circle time to check in and connect in the mornings to support those who were being disruptive. I think implementing this resource would be better suited for earlier in the year.”

In what way did your perception of the issues relevant to your class change? I was surprised at the number of children who have no limits on the wifi at home and who take devices into their rooms. This was after several meetings with parents about digital safety.

What was something that surprised you about your class throughout the teaching and learning of this kit? How many students knew about everything but ran with the thought that nothing would happen to them. Also the number of students who had dealt with cyber bullying or been part of it.

“We are a digital school and students thought they knew everything so this kit really woke them up. All tasks were really relevant and the child-focussed and relevant. My class is year 6 to 8 and we had some really fantastic discussions. I plan to re-use this kit next year. Thanks to those who put this together you were spot on!!!”
