“The children from our Year 5 Whare loved visiting Dolbel Reserve in our local environment. We had whanau come and help us to pick up rubbish as well. Any litter from Dolbel Reserve has the potential to go into Taipo Stream. When we returned to school we got into groups and sorted the rubbish to be able to fill in our big sheet.”
“I teach a Year 4 class and we used the kit as part of our social inquiry action plan alongside our buddy class (a Year 2 class). The kit was extremely helpful in providing students with the equipment needed for us to clean up a local recreational area. The students were absolutely amazed at the amount of rubbish they collected and collated, and as such were all determined to do something about it. This resulted in them writing letters to the Environment Minister. The kids were horrified to learn about the effects litter has on the environment and the animals that live within it. The equipment provided in the kit was great, the students especially loved the fact that they each got their own pair of gloves to wear and they enjoyed the art activity where they stuck the rubbish onto the animal pictures. Thank you SchoolKit for a great experience!”
“A fantastic very easy to use kit. We regularly clean up our seawall and walkway because we have a lot of day trippers walking through and a dairy next door. keep these awesome kits coming please.”
“Unfortunately we were unable to use the SeaClean Resource on our planned EOTC as it arrived too late. However, we put it too great use in our school, as recycling, reduce, reuse is a whole school focus. I am sending a copy of Henry Hill School facebook post which we showed how we used the SeaClean Kit. It was a fantastic hands-on activity which allowed our class to use an integrated curriculum:
Room 1s #CanKidz have been hard at work this week conducting statistical investigations. We have been learning about sorting our data in ways that help us make interpretations. We have noticed small amounts of rubbish blowing around the playground so today we headed outside to help Papatūānuku by picking up the rubbish. While we were at it we put our maths learning into practice recording how much plastic, paper, food scraps, fabric… that we found. The results surprised us. The graph ended up being quite big! There were lots of tiny bits of plastic food wrappers and paper. We found that there is more we can do to keep Papatūānuku clean. One #CanKid said “It would be great if we had nothing to write down, then it would be clean.” The next challenge is to see who can count exactly how many items are in each column. #Kaitiaki #Connected #Collaborative #Mathematicians #ALLin
I don't know how to add photos in this section, so I have added them in my reply post.”
“This kit was used with a yr 2/3 class. Right from the start the children were engaged and into it. We made our own school plans after walking around the perimeter then added in the buildings. Then we took our plans and identified and recorded all the water ways :gutters, storm water pits, down pipe holes and streams bordering the school. This was a fantastic exercise as it really bought home how litter trapped and washed away in these places makes their way to the sea. From here we did our clean up in the neighboring streets focusing on the gutters and verges as we are so close to the sea. We ended up at the beach as well to complete our cleanup. When collecting the discussions and comments made by the kids were priceless. This was a great unit and really made the kids aware of how every piece of rubbish matters no matter how big or small. A very positive experience.”
“Sea Cleaner Kit was good in that it included gloves for picking up rubbish and activities to do with it after.
The hard part about the kit was the planning bit on the school's part for parent helpers - we had to opt for cleaning school grounds.”
