How has this kit impacted on your class culture? Students are more aware of our environment and are now making sure their soft plastics go into the correct bin so that they can be taken down to Future Post where they are used to manufacture fence posts.

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? They were shocked to see how much we collected especially in light of the fact that 2 classes did this on the same day and time. They collected heaps and so did we.

“We enjoyed this kit. We went out and cleaned our school as well as around the school , bordering the estuary. We collected 4 bags of rubbish. The kids sorted them out. Lots of soft plastics as well as bottles and cans.”

They thought their beach looked quite clean on their initial survey. They were surprised at the variety of rubbish found, also what had obviously washed up and been in the sea for some time.

How has this kit impacted on your class culture? It was a wonderful way to build whanaungatanga as we made it compulsory for the parents to attend so they brought their entire families and it was a wonderful morning of working together and getting to know each other.

“We used the School Kit with the School Council and they were fascinated with the analysis of the rubbish and the story the rubbish might have told due to the type of rubbish we found. They were equally fascinated by the creatures that had made adaptations to live amongst long standing rubbish, like old clay pipes. They have continued the crusade by spreading the message at school by creating posters.”

“What an amazing resource, we were very excited about this kit and planned a trip to the beach. Excitement levels were high we had researched and done all the ways we could help to keep the beach clean. However the trip was cancelled due to the weather and we had to send home the gloves for children to use and take independently. I am yet to receive any photos of the children cleaning up the beaches.”

“We have been eagerly awaiting our class trip to Long Bay Beach to look at the rock pools. My students have become eco warriors who are very keen to do a beach clean up to keep our oceans clean and to protect all our sea creatures. Although we have not been on the trip yet my students are cleaning up around the school and are very aware of any rubbish they find could possibly end up in our oceans.”
