How has this kit impacted on your class culture? It has made them more aware that its important to dispose of rubbish correctly and hopefully inform their families as well.

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? The students realised the different categories of rubbish collected were. I think they were amazed with the amount of rubbish picked up in a small area. We had a hikoi last week and decided to do the rubbish clean up on the road side back down to school.

“Students have enjoyed the sea cleaners kit. It has made them realise that each bit of rubbish thrown out has an impact on the waterways and how it can travel so far into the ocean. They were interested in finding out about how the different animals are impacted by eating the plastics. Also fascinated about how much plastic is found in the marine animals. Thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you”

How has this kit impacted on your class culture? We are far more aware of what goes in our drains, in our rubbish, rubbish in our lunchboxes etc. Putting students in mixed groups was great for them to get to know each other and work together for a common goal.

It was great because they got so enthusiastic about wanting to clean up the environment and no longer wanted to harm the creatures in the ocean. What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We have really used this as a springboard for further learning. Next term we are going further to complete a wearable arts unit based on the idea of creating outfits using as much recycled materials as possible.

How has this kit impacted on your class culture? Overall the students are all more aware of the impact rubbish has on the environment. They are worried about the impact that that the rubbish has particularly on wildlife. It has been something so positive for our class that they are now thinking outside

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? The students are a lot more aware now of the impact that rubbish has on the environment and animals. We now have more than ever students coming up to us sharing about the rubbish they have seen and collected during their break times, which is awesome!

“We enjoyed using this kit as a springboard for learning about our environment and the animals under the ocean. The kids developed a strong understanding of the effects of rubbish on wildlife and they loved wearing the sea cleaner gloves to collect the rubbish. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we were unable to have a big clean up as planned so we instead went to a local park that we were able to walk to.”

How has this kit impacted on your class culture? There has been a shift in our understanding of what citizenship is and how we can be better citizens both in our own communities and on a global scale.

“We are an inland school. I planned to hopefully adapt this kit to be used for the fresh water but it didn't really work out. “An excellent kit. This kit coincided with our study of recycling and waste so it fitted in perfectly. The children were concerned about the amount of waste we produce and how this can go into the sea so they were extremely keen to clean up our school environment using the kit. They loved the big bags and the fancy gloves too, they felt very grown up using them.”
