“We tied the self esteen kit into the work we were doing on Health and Sexuality and it was a match made in heaven. The students identified the values that made their parents who they are today and from there they could see the impact of others on them. Young people are bombarded by the media- in particular exposure and engagenment with social media. Learning the importance of being authentic and how to respect yourself, as well as those around you are valuable life lessons. This kit had a range of tasks that encouraged to look beyond the surface and start asking why. At school we use an online app that tracks student welbeing. They answer a series of questions each fortnight and the results are collated and trends/ concerns can be identified. This resource allowed me to learn more in a different way. We need to try lots of approaches in order to better understand the complexities of life for some students. Thanks for the opportunity to engage and share.”

“Parts of the kit were great but alot of this kit was a bit more involved than I wanted, there was a large portion that you couldnt do unless you did the part before...my whānanu engagement is very low so parts of the kit I was unable to do.”

Was there a particular component that struck a chord with your class? Caring Adult Letters - the parents really got in behind the idea and each child had at least two letters. They all read one comment from a letter - that made them laugh or feel loved/ special. It is such a great idea and a lovely way to end the term!

How has this the kit influenced the way in which students speak to each other? I think it has given the kids an understanding of each other and a respect for each other. When we looked at the Dove body image video, and I asked if anyone was prepared to mek a similar 'I like/but I don't like' statement, one of the shyest girls in class was willing to share which I think showed how safe she felt. I

What is the legacy this kit will leave behind on your learners? I think it reminded them/made them, realise that they all have people who care for them and want the best for the.

“Whilst I ordered the kit for Term Two, time restraints meant that we didn't get onto it until Term Four. Whilst we didn't get everything completed my class, and their families loved it. We had fantastic discussions about influences on young people; social media, peers etc and the importance of knowing your people. The circle of influence, and getting the kids to think about who or what impacted and shaped their parents when they were young was excellent and the highlight was the Caring Adult letters.”
