This was used as a short unit for a busy term. The range of activities was engaging and it could be picked up and left off quite easily as needed. The characters helped ground students in the learning.

Dea 13 year old me contained some useful resources and ways to connect students to concepts. It was challenging to implement in a class where there were not consistent lessons to allow for progression, and differentiating for the varied abilities was difficult.

Students were initially stumped thinking 10 or 20 years ahead, but once assigned a character, they were fully engaged—exploring mistakes, decisions, and the long-term impact of financial choices, sometimes even “growling” at their character for the decisions made! The biggest impact was seeing how long-term interest affects savings and debt. The School Kit lesson plans were clear and easy to follow. One small suggestion: include a little “gift” for every character to avoid disappointment. Overall, it was engaging, thought-provoking, and surprisingly fun!

The game at the beginning was too difficult for my learners (and me!) and then a few of the other activities were a bit difficult for my learners to connect with - connecting the stories with kiwisaver etc was a bit too tricky for them. I used it for a couple of lessons for the compound interest and kiwisaver ideas but it didn't work for us more than that. Thanks!

Our school has financial literacy as part of a 7 week rotation with all of the junior whanau classes, so this pack wasn’t quite suitable for us as there wasn’t enough time and some of it was a bit confusing to get through. I think if it was a full year course it would be much better to use for that.
