My students enjoyed the learning in the kit. The best part for them was writing their own letter to their future selves about what money habits they had learnt.

Which part/s of the kit did you find the most useful in supporting you to teach financial literacy and why? The sorted savings tool was really great and supplemented the other parts of my unit that weren't from the school kit as well. I did like the letters and how rich they were with information - I just needed some more scaffolding for how to make best use of this. Maybe some worksheets or questions for students to go through and help them use the tools. "If the farm worker puts $60 a week away at 10% interest, how much will he have in 30 years? How much of this is interest? What is the interest earned in the 28th year?" That kind of thing??

Can you share any standout moments or student reactions while using the kit? Definitely a lot of "wows" when looking at the Sorted savings calculator and putting a portion of their own wages into it every week to see what they end up with in 30 years.
How have conversations in your classroom changed over the course of teaching this kit? The students are more interested in compound interest and are obviously thinking about what they should be doing with their money now in order to have more when they grow older.

I only used some of the resources because of the time pressure at the end of term. The tools were great - particularly the Sorted Savings Calculator, and the students loved getting their letters from the future. I liked the idea of the logic puzzle but myself and another teacher didn't manage to do it and the students didn't manage to finish it either. It would be great if there was a teacher answer sheet that showed a step by step or if there was more scaffolding - perhaps more clues to read to students if they are struggling. For me, I think a lot of this is material that I'm not very fluent with myself and it needs more prior knowledge than I have. More scaffolding would help here.

I enjoyed teaching this unit to my math students. They are a small group of boys who really enjoyed the practical activities of this kit. It was great that all of the language is current and relevant terms that all of the students knew about.

How have conversations in your classroom changed over the course of teaching this kit? Understanding wants and needs, the time to pay something off vs the hours you need to work. Is it worth it? Will it last as long as the payments will?

This kit supplies everything I wish I had been told at 13 years old. The engaging and relateable activities were able to cater for the range of life situations within my class. We had some really surprising discussions that were meaningful and honest. I recommend this to any year 9 or 10 maths or social studies teacher.

Can you share any standout moments or student reactions while using the kit? The students immediately were turned off from the kit when trying to do the quadruplets activity. This activity was simply beyond all but the most capable students. Also the discussions around money/savings/wages etc caused some frowns and discomfort as many of the students are from low income families on benefits. To be constantly shown weath and decision making around earnings is not something many enjoy.
How have conversations in your classroom changed over the course of teaching this kit? The students will discuss the topic at times but we only have 2 hours a week and they don't seem capable of projecting themselves in to the future when they will actually be living in a world where they earn/spend/save money.

The resources are wonderfully presented with a unit plan and suggestions for teachers. I would say that the content level is way higher than my classes and needed to be written in a way that makes sense to my students. To just give the box out to department members would be negatively received as it is not a set of 'ready to go' resources and they require time to develop actual lessons around each learning area. I am not sure that every teacher would invest this time. Some discomfort from those students that are from disadvantaged backgrounds and living in poverty. Kiwisaver and mortgages are not relevant to many; poverty and how to support yourself and a family on benefit would be useful.

Can you share any standout moments or student reactions while using the kit? Just that they hadnt thought of 'money stuff' going forward but are now really excited about getting their first jobs and making their money work for them.
How have conversations in your classroom changed over the course of teaching this kit? More positive outlooks around money and they have bigger but more achievable money goals - more than I just want to be a millionaire and it will just happen.

Dear 13 year old me is a great resource for older kids to reflect and learn about all things money. It gives them a great context for financial literacy. Helping them to make more informed choices moving forward as they start their first jobs etc. Well resourced and supported as always with a School Kit.
