While the event itself hasn't happened yet, students in our class put together a fantastic plan for a social action project to benefit a local charity at our school. The roles were really helpful, as was the planning sheet to figure out who to support - and how to do it! They got really into the voting!!

I have a couple of ākonga in my class who are really community-minded, and they entered this project with vigour and enthusiasm that was catching! We decided to tackle the issue of rubbish getting into our school drains, and into our community drains. It lead to some amazing discussion about the perils of pollution in our waterways. We looked at ways to prevent litter entering the drains, but it became apparent pretty quickly that we needed to educate our kura and community. A really worthwhile learning programme.

A wonderful kit to help kids see that they can make a difference. Due to time constraints we had to tie our volunteering in with our sustainable market but this worked well as picking up rubbish fitted in well with our sustainability focus. We also as a class raised over $300 for a local food bank so tying the two together the kids were really proud of the difference they had made in their community.

Due to ill-health and transport issues, we had to change direction a bit with our 'volunteer' work. We have three things planned and have completed the first one which was making bookmarks for our New Entrant students. I quizzed the class as to what we could do to help our younger learners in the school and the majority vote was to make them bookmarks as reading is fun. The next 'mission' is to write letters of kindness to one of our teachers who is moving to a new school in the city next year. After this, we are going to invite Mr S and his class to a shared kai next week. We will post some more photos and reviews from this next week. This kit is great because I wanted the ideas to come from the students as to how we could help or recognise others in our school or wider community. We have voted for two leaders to take charge with the shared kai and how best to present our kindness messages to Mr S. As a team, we have decided on a lot of the food we want to provide but the students know that they will need to talk to their parents/whanau as well.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/schoolkitsquad/permalink/2364713150447183/ I didn't find the kit very suitable for our year 0&;1 learners. Too much written info/things to do for them we used the flag, vests and we have everyone a badge afterwards as a thank you reward. I would not sign up for this again for juniors. Details of what we did (linked to student led inquiry) a d photos on School Kit Squad FB page, link above. Thanks

27 students from Room 1 &; 2 painted stones and wrote kindness messages on them. We took them to our local kindy, hid them outside and then started with the kindy kids after they found a stone each. The Scholl kids had so much fun doing this whole project and especially playing at kindy! Everyone was smiling!

A great kit to work in collaboration with other students across year levels and giving back to the community.

We have had ups nd downs with our project. Students wanted to create a fitness path in our community close to the schools so that children and other community members could enjoy it as they walk past. Auckland Transport promised to get back to us about whether we could or not but we are still waiting for that... However, all is not lost. The students got together and asked the BOT if they could put it in our school as community the school is open to the community after school hours. ' Yes!' they said! and the SVA are preparing this to happen next Monday! Hooray! Thanks SVA headquarters. What a great initiative!
